I was reading some Bulldawg history and they mentioned that Bama, UT, GT and UGA all refused to play there until UGA did in 1960. Is there any certain reason why? TIA

Auburn was not an easy place to get to back then. In the 60's, even 280 was a winding little highway all the way from Birmingham. Imagine how hard it was on UT to travel by bus from Knoxville. They played them in Birmingham until 1980 or so.

Didn't want to use outhouses and enjoyed the luxury of hot water.

Georgia started playing there in 1960 and Georgia Tech didn't play there until 1970?

I thought Georgia athletics > Tech's?

Aubie brass will tell you the game want played because of the per diem or some other bullshite. No, we just were the team in the state and saw no value in playing. Similar to LSU playing Tulane or Ole Sis playing southern miss.

We played Georgia Tech in Auburn for the first time in 1896. Here's a funny story about it ranked as one of the greatest pranks in college football:

Because it was a small shitty field in the middle of no where?

Transportation back then was not as easy as it is these days.

As other have pointed out, this wasn't just an Auburn thing, lots of schools played in larger nearby city due to better stadiums or easier transportation.

Alabama and Auburn didn't play anywhere from 1907 to 1948. So for one of the country's top rivalries, they haven't really played each other much.

The series was discontinued after a 6-6 tie in 1907 -- the only tie in Iron Bowl history -- because the schools could not agree on daily expenses for players, as well as on who would officiate the game.

The hotel allowance for each of the 17 players on both teams in 1907 was $2 per day, including lodging and meals. In January 1908, Auburn, then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute, proposed $3.50 per day for 22 players for two nights; Alabama offered $3 per day for 20 players for two nights.

Auburn also wanted officials from the North to officiate the game, believing Southern officials were biased toward Alabama.

By late September 1908, the schools agreed to Auburn's demands on daily expenses and on Alabama's suggested compromises on other issues.

But they couldn't settle on a date.

Auburn offered four possibles dates, but two had passed before Alabama replied. By then, it became too late to change dates of other games.

Alabama would not cancel a game against Haskell Institute in late November. Auburn refused to change its rule of prohibiting football games after Thanksgiving.

The series was done - until 1948 that is.

It wasn't until 1960 that Auburn finally decided to remove all the residual cow patties around town and campus.

Auburn didn't have a designated "safe space".

Football has changed a lot. There was a time when MSU was playing more road games and on top of that had to travel to Jackson, MS 155 miles away as a "Home" game. Life isn't always fair but until the 1990's did we even begin to expand our stadium.

Railroad Travel had much to do with where games were played in the early days through post WWII.
