The interlocking AU was first seen on a student's bass drum in the marching band, created by said student and his buddy. It was soon tweaked and adopted by the school.

Others?

How, in fact, is the AU "interlocking"? It looks more like someone typed a "U" then went back over it and typed an "A".
Not necessarily interlocking.

It's there... you just have to look really hard... and use your imagination.

Paul Dietzel created the logo, and it's rumored he put "PD" in the bird's feathers on purpose to put his stamp on it.

Mississippi State basketball coach Richard Williams saw this Marshall Track logo somewhere.

This was Mississippi State's first version, and it was used for basketball only.

eventually became the current, used for all sports except baseball

It seems like somebody saw the Oakland A's logo and said "That's what we need here."

I really hate this logo as the primary. It's extremely generic and dull. We need to go back to the elephant stepping through the A.

Pretty cool story here on the birth of the iconic Mississippi State Baseball M over S logo. I know no one cares. LINK
