Any cities you would recommend targeting? We're not in a hurry, but we don't have anything tying us down and have an interest in relocating.
Preferences:
1-South of Atlanta/North of Tampa
2-Family oriented midsize town
3-Low crime
4-Access to water (fishing and swimming)
5-Good public education
6-Healthy job market (healthcare field)

Gonna have a hard time finding all that in GA south of Atlanta. Columbus has a decent healthcare job market but issues with crime. Macon is a shithole. Savannah isn't bad I guess. Warner Robins is probably worth a look but it's heavily centered around military base life. Peach tree city maybe?

You could always move back to Auburn, assuming you lived there and went to school.
Lake Martin isn't that far away.
I don't know really much about the cities in Georgia or Florida. St Petersburg is nice, but you said north of Tampa.

The Dothan/Eufaula area is great. Close to the beach. Close to Lake Eufaula. About 150k people in the area. Big hospital system. Good public schools.

Why anyone would want to live in South Georgia is beyond me. Total hell hole.

Auburn/Opelika
Dothan/Eufaula
Birmingham
Montgomery
With the last 2, you will need to be in the suburbs for 2, 3, and 5 on your list.

We love Savannah. Always something to do. Thriving arts scene, great restaurants and nightlife, ten minutes from beach. Crime is pretty bad for a city its size though.

I used to live there and go back semi frequently to help relatives. That place needs to get nuked.

I don't live there but but I like the Thomasville area. Its a smaller town but you are very close to Tallahassee.

You've described Gainesville, Florida to a T I think. Not sure what their healthcare job market is like, but I imagine it might be decent with a medical school there.

1-South of Atlanta/North of Tampa The one exception.
The Panhandle
Gulf Breeze, Ft Walton, Navarree
Everything mentioned is in these locations.

I've heard the same about Thomasville. Nothing but good things, supposed to be a nice town.
As much as I personally don't care for the place, Gainesville, FL probably does meet most of those listed requirements. I personally want nothing to do with the place (and not because of the UGA fandom) but I know people that live there/have lived there who seem to like it well enough

There are plenty of healthcare jobs with a VA, Shands (UF's teaching hospital), and North Florida regional.
However, it is about as far from ocean as you get in Florida. 1 1/2 hours. Though there are springs and lakes nearby.

Requiring a "family oriented, mid-size town" often contradicts "good, public education." Typically the best public school systems are in wealthier suburbs outside large cities... however, there are some exceptions.
Auburn sounds like your best fit. It's school system ranks as one of the best in the state (#5 district behind only Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Madison, and Homewood according to schooldigger.com). With a metro population of just 150,000, it is certainly not a big city. It's violent crime rate is well below the state average. It's just a short drive to Lake Martin, which is one of the best lakes in the state, IMO. And its constantly rated as having the best job market in the state.
I'd say it checks every box.
Otherwise, I'd go with Baldwin County in Alabama. It checks all those same boxes, and behind Auburn, is the 2nd fastest growing area of the state. The schools are not quite as good, but there are some pretty decent ones down there. They are certainly better than average compared to the rest of the state.
Savannah is a possibility. Good public schools are hard to come by and the crime rate is actually quite high too. But they have a strong job market and its on the coast.
And I guess I'd say the Destin-Ft. Walton, FL area is also a possibility. Again, its on the coast and has a booming job market. Traffic and dealing with tourists in the summer though would be a major pain.

For FL -
Gainesville has high taxes, high utilities in the city, and silly traffic issues. Move 15 miles in any direction from there and you can live comfortably for less, with less headaches. Schools are better in Alachua county, but make sure you do your research. There are good schools surrounding them in other counties. There is the VA, Shands, UF healthcare all located, as well as plenty of other facilities. It is closer to the gulf coast and lots of river fun while still not too far to the beaches of the Atlantic. I live about 30 minutes east in the edge of Clay county with good schools.
Ocala has plenty of old folks that require health care and puts you less than 1.5 hours from either coast. Schools are ok, and right now prices are not bad on housing.
St Augustine/St Johns County is nice, with great schools and the quaint atmosphere. The housing is pricey and traffic is getting bad. I really am not sure about work, but Jax is not far to commute depending where you start from and where you are headed.
Anything south of Ocala is out of my range. Jacksonville is a pit unless you have enough money for the beaches.
For GA I would only do Savannah if I could live outside the city or out on the islands. Nothing in the middle of the state is worth it unless you want small town life. I do like Thomasville and that area, but I like to quail hunt.

Tallahassee has all that. I moved here recently and it's pretty nice.
Edit: I thought you said midsize city. Probably be too big for you.

I know it's not technically in your 3 states but it sounds like Tallahassee fits what you're looking for.
