Except that they have no other option.

The NFL wont take them for 3 years

They don't just get an education, food, shelter, things like that

they are getting world class training for a lucrative job, in an excessively competitive job market.

How? They know what's up before they sign their LOI. There's no mystery. They choose this path.

I don't see anyone being taken advantage of here.

UF and other schools give money from the AD back to academics. Not all schools can afford to do this.

Kill athletic scholarships and this will clean itself up within 3 years.

Right, and that's part of the point.

But could they get that training elsewhere if viable alternative markets (to use roadGator's phrase) actually existed? Likely, they would get BETTER training because they would be professionals or semi-professionals and not bound by NCAA practice limitations.

As I said, one party disproportionately benefits from the labor of the other. It isn't that complicated.

Then I would say you are refusing to see reality for what it is, frankly.

A pittance compared to their revenue and salaries for their top employees (which are often the highest public salaries in any state).

They do have options.

Football: There are semi-pro teams out there and the CFL.

Baseball is set.

Basketball can go to D League or Europe, Asia, etc.

That's bullshite and you know it.

Right, and the best players never attend college. Instead, they get world class professional development in the minors.

A tough route, but true.

That 52k/yr in just tuition being paid free is just awful. Getting into a great school with subpar academics is awful. Getting thousands of dollars in free perks is awful. Getting free tutoring and being guaranteed to "pass" is terrible. Thousands of dollars in free gear and bowl gifts is terrible.

Sure the University makes money off of you. That is how life works. Lots of people will make more money off of you than they are paying you. That is like every job in the entire world. I'm sure the NFL must be modern slavery too, because the owners will make way more off of you than you are worth.

Sure NCAA rules are stupid, but without them, the University system would be destroyed and athletics would be worthless.

It can't be done without the shite show that follows.

I won't feel sorry for kids that make the decision to attend Clemson knowing that they could have skipped that route and gone another direction.

Saying it again won't make it true. There are no other viable routes to the NFL.

They would have to pay someone to train them. Or they would have to generate money in a minor league system. Generally people wont pay NFL or even college money for minor league systems.

Also, the NFL has 0 incentive to form a minor league. Currently they have a free farm system. One that is way bigger and better funded than anything they could do on their own. There are 128 FBS teams. Thats a lot of chances to find a diamond in the rough.

There would be if you ended athletic scholarships.

There is now. The best can go straight to the CFL and skip all this unfair treatment they willingly sign up for.

Yes and no. The University pays scholarships for guys who almost never see the field. Detractors always want to bring up a megastar and talk about his value to the team and ignore the fact that there's 20 guys on the team who don't see the field.

No, someone would pay them to be trained. That's the point of a minor league.

Let the NFL subsidize it. It should be their league, after all.

Exactly. But as a thought experiment, do you think they would invest in a minor league if CFB didn't exist?

yes they would have to.

Football athletes would then quickly realize why the CFB system is much better than the minor league system for the players. Sure they get that signing bonus up front but after that you don't receive much money again until you earn your way up several leagues into the majors. until then it's bus rides around the country earning very little with no chance of having other skills you might be able to get in college if you realize you aren't going to be good enough to make it in the majors.

Can you imagine these spoiled brats riding buses and staying in cheap hotels and getting meals from Denny's at midnight after the game?

Let?

Is the NFL banging down the doors trying to spend money on a farm system?

currently they have 128 teams that each get to work on 85 players at least. Thats a lot of free scouting, and development for the NFL.

But the NFL is going to give that up and just spend money so they can try and find out whether Dwayne Thomas is worth a roster spot after 5 years.

Also i don't think these kids realize how little money minor league players make .

If they are college material they could still attend when their minor league career is over.
