I know people like Odom, but...
1. He only coached the Defense at Memphis for 1 winning season before coming to Mizzou.
2. Memphis actually improved as a team after he left. Was it his coaching, or Fuente's that made the difference.
3. The glaring weak spot on defense was Safeties. Coached by the guy Odom picked.
4. Odom doesn't have that signature defensive game yet. What makes him different from other good DC's. Not recruiting so far, why does he get the reins of a SEC program?
Mizzou has a shot at Herman if they offer him the same salary as was being paid to Pinkel. It's a lot, but it would make a statement about the direction of Mizzou Football.

Would Herman view Mizzou as a stepping stone job or a destination?
I think almost all coaches in their 40s think of their next job as a stepping stone. Show me one guy around 40 who you think will be at his current head coaching position in 10 years.
The NFL tends to be the place they dream of. that doesnt mean they dont get to a campus and realize they like that life and decide to stick around.
just go out and get the best coach now and not worry if he will be there in 5 years.
and that guy is Tom Herman.

Herman is the best choice.
I'd say let Odom go and promote Kug. Dude is an NFL factory. That's what kids want to play towards.
Don't find that every day.

Not that I don't agree that Herman is the best option, but look at what Memphis was when Odom went there.
He took a defense that was ranked below 120 nationally and improved each year to a top 20 team in 3 years.
Memphis offense was terrible the first 2.5 years there.
Every team Mizzou has faced this year has had a below average production.
Who knows the f he will be a good HC, but he is one of the best DCs in the nation.

Odom is a great coach. He's young. He's renowned as one of the best play callers in the nation and he does a great job getting guys to play his scheme correctly. He'd also probably show a lot of loyalty.
He'd be a great choice.

Then who's the hot OC? We can't do this again next year.

Major Applewhite is the OC at Houston.
Maybe recruit Bob Stitt from Montana.

Andy Hill is my choice; he's already the Associate HC & his demeanor is the same as GP's. He should be able to keep all the other coaches there thus no turmoil.

Gotta disagree on Andy Hill. Can't even coach QB's. And the assistants aren't going anywhere, they just signed new contracts. Those contracts are with the University not with pinkel. It's up to the new HC to keep them or not.
Don't laugh...Lane Kiffin as new HC.

The one shitty thing about last week is it probably eliminates a good candidate because it will look like the AD is pandering...Dino Babers.
He's proven he can run his offense without the greatest OL talent. He's an Offensive minded guy with a background from A&M and Baylor, but he's black and a good amount of the Mizzou Nation will ignore his accomplishments and just scream that the AD is folding to "white guilt."

Fricking kidding me? The man has gave up the least points of anyone in the SEC. Odom should be our HC. Kul should be the new DC. Now as far as OC, that's the big tamale.

South Carolina thinks they have Herman in the bag. If Rhoades wants him, they need to move fast.
I wouldn't mind Odom, but a first-time HC is risky.

Y'all should hire Mike Leach.
I'm sure many would hate it, but that damn guy can coach, and he's a clone of Bobby Petrino in that area and that can win in the SEC like Petrino did.
Leach has done an unreal job at Wazzu capped off with the UCLA win tonight, and it's entertaining as all hell football. If he can retain the DL coach among a few other on that side, I think it'd be a homerun.
He went to a complete no talent shithole at Wazzu, a team that was 1-11, 2-10 before he got there, and they're now 7-3 in the PAC12 and with who they have left, likely going 9-3 this year. Just insane.
Probably won't happen, but Leach will upgrade jobs very soon and deservedly so.

Yeh, Gabe is reporting that Herman is at the top of tUSC list. He says it's up to Herman of which place (situation) he likes better and it's also a timing issue for Mizzou. I think Odom clouds the air a little for Mizzou because they have to make a decision and pretty quick or maybe lose their number one HC candidate to a rival school. tUSC doesn't appear to be in the same boat and they have had a head start on Mizzou by several weeks.
I personally have no idea if Odom could handle such a big step. I think he would approach it much in the same way if not exactly the same way HCGP runs the program now. The question really isn't if he can coach, we know he can coach. The question to me is can he take the program to the next level? A step above GP? I just don't know. I would imagine that it would be rough to take your first HC job in one of if not the toughest FB conference in America. Tough way to learn the ropes.
I could support an Odom hire. But my gut tells me it would be a rough start. I think Mizzou has to go for an experienced head coach right now. I think Odom deserves a shot at some point. But, I don't know if it's right now.

I'm in agreement. No HC experience is risky. This is the SEC. Maybe an established OC/DC...maybe? Kirby Smart level? T. Herman was the OSU OC. And by level, I'm meaning from a blue-blood winning national program.
Mizzou money (GP is at $4.1M) and the SEC should really help us. I do know that this is going to be very interesting.

Herman only has 1 year of HC experience.
Ole Miss & Auburn both hired guys that only had been a HC for 1 year.
Bottom line is that Rhoades needs to hire the guy that he thinks is the best.

Plus if he goes to Memphis you can bring him back again if the next HC fails or uses MO as a stepping stone.
Or he's (hopefully) a good fall back for now if other choices don't pan out between now and Jan. 1st.
