That's a bad way to go when hiring a coach.

Get the best coach you can. Get donors behind you.

This. We need a guy like Herman or someone who has proven results and some level of experience. This hire will be crucial in determining Mizzou's future in the SEC.

Just so many open jobs. Mack hiring Herman at Houston certainly can't hurt. But there are some other higher profile jobs.

The hire will certainly be important. Mack is known to be an aggressive hiring AD, so that can only help.

I just don't want us to set ourselves up to feel bad if we hire Odom..who is a good choice in his own right.

There is one higher profile job open. Two if you count Miami, but I don't.

I think Richt saved himself at Georgia and Strong will get one more year at Texas. Both of those things help us, I think.

OK, I just don't see the paranoia with losing Odom right away. I mean at some point he may get an offer, but right now I just don't see it unless it's Mizzou offering. I fail to see what he's done to bypass other qualified coaches that may be HC's already or other assistants with more tenure. He's not the only good assistant in this conference or others.

Miami. USC. Both are higher profile.

Va Tech, Illinois, Maryland, and South Carolina are P5 jobs as well that are actually pretty similar to us IMO. Each have negatives and positives. But that is alot to compete against for the same 4 or so big names.

This kind of has that familiar feel to it. Going and getting the "safe" hire. To take the next step, this school will have to ante up. If not, it'll probably stay about the same. I hope I'm 100% wrong about the safe hire thing.

Were a better fit for Herman than USCe because coming to Mizzou means not having to sever Texas recruiting inroads he just made. Going to USCe means depending on GA, which we already recruit hard. We have a history in Texas, USCe doesn't. So at Mizzou he gets recruits from Mo, Texas and GA, not too bad.

He has also shown a desire to "build a fence" when it comes to recruiting. Mizzou desperately needs that fence around St. Louis and KC.

Re:Miami

They've been out of the loop for a long time. They had one fantastic period in their history. They've been pretty much shite before and after. Horrible facilities and a small fan/donor base. At least 3rd in the Florida pecking order right now.

Like I said, I could see why some may put the job above ours but I personally wouldn't.

I agree. And their situation is at least as toxic as ours might be considered to be.

I'd put Mizzou ahead of the U. That may be a little homerish, but I think it's legit.

Miami doesn't have the money or facilities that Mizzou and others have. What they do have is a ton of local talent. if they get a guy capable of keeping that talent, then that's an easy way to a national title.

Butch Jones was the recruiting coordinator for Jimmy Johnson, then came back after that had major sanctions and built one of the most talented teams ever in a short period. That local talent will be a big draw for several of these coaches.

I like Herman as well. He has proved to be a good recruiter at OSU and his short time at Houston.

He's smart( member of MENSA) and what little I watched against Memphis I liked his offense.

I hope Mizzou is all in on Herman and Applewhite as OC.

I got good news in the race for Tom Herman vs South Carolina. LINK The playing field is now even in that department. We also have the Mack Rhoades ties with Herman advantage. The momentum is tilting back in our favor.

I love how they allow literally 100's of threads slinging shite all over Mizzou but they whack any thread discussing South Carolina's issue.

It's fricking laughable really.

Herman would be a good get but if not Campbell at Toledo would be a good conciliation hire. I kind of like the fact he brought his team down here and beat a stumbling Arky. That's at least something. With the right talent in place he may prove to be a viable option.

What about Odom with Pep Hamillton as OC.

He's a guy who has spent a lot of time in the NFL which could be a plus for recruiting and also was the OC at Stanford under Harbaugh and has been the OC for the Colts since 2013. He was fired by the Colts this year, but looks to me to be more of a fall guy for Luck playing like shite than anything else.

If we do give the job to Odom we need to make sure to pair him with an experienced OC

I wonder with Mack's relationship with Houston if he can get a discount on the large buyout if he can help them in a new head coaching search. Maybe suggest an already on-the-way-out Odom perhaps?
