Bills filed to reinstate football, restructure Board of Trustees

quote:

The second - HB 340, with 42 co-sponsors - proposes a restructuring of the University of Alabama system board of trustees, including having the membership reflect where the campuses are located and decreasing consecutive terms served. The board oversees operations at the University of Alabama, UAB and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

quote:

"I think we've sent a clear message that there's support in the legislature for reform efforts," Williams said, adding that he was "very pleased" with the response.

quote:

All three proposed bills are pending action in the Education Policy committee. Williams said he expects that committee action to take place within the next three weeks.

The first two bills should pass. I don't think the third will.

I can only imagine the national headlines if a constitutional amendment ordering a public university to play football, and written by a graduate of a Bible correspondence school, were to pass.

Also, this belongs on the Off-Topic Board.

I'm an Alabama grad, but I would fully support allowing UAB to break away from the UA system and become "The University of Birmingham." If they could do that, I think they could eventually compete athletically with other urban schools from CUSA like Memphis and Cincinnati.

The one about restricting the committee has to be voted on by the public so I doubt that'll pass. Too many ignorant Bama fans in the state.

Hell there's probably too many ignorant Bama fan politicians in the state house and senate for them to pass there either. Also the ones from outside of Birmingham probably don't care much anyway.

All 3 of the bills are the direction UAB needs to head in though, and would be whats best for the state's largest city and employer in the long run.

Yeah dude. Bills introduced into the Alabama State Legislature intended to redesign the UA board of trustees has no business being discussed by the SECr. I'm sure one of our Bama brothers would have brought this news here to be discussed.

HB 339 should pass and honestly something like this should have been done years ago. After all the crap Auburn went through with SACS, all because of a couple of board members, I would hate to see any school go through that. Not that it would completely keep trustees from meddling, but the threat of removal due to violation of SACS guidelines might tone it down some.

HB 340, even if it passes both sides of the legislature it will die on the ballot. Not because Bama fans want to keep UAB tethered, but because a lot of people in the state really do not know or care what the board of trustees do, or how it is currently selected. In cases like this, voter will vote to leave something as is because they figure it isn't hurting them as it is now.

HB 341 is just ridiculous and it is a shame it has even been listed as a bill.
