Followed it up with no mention of Marshall. He said Avery Johnson and Brad Stevens were candidates.

Then one of NBA guys I follow tweeted this:

@ChrisMannixSI: Keep an eye on NBA coaches for the Texas job. AD Steve Patterson has an NBA background and has spoken with NBA coaching agents recently.

Avery Johnson makes more sense. I see Stevens going to Indiana if and when that job opens.

#Texas' contact with #VCU coach Shaka Smart has come through #UT's search firm. That way everyone can say "no direct contact."

from the wsu board:
quote:

The offer from Bama is 4.2M for 6 years. Gregg has till Friday to decide. Word is Lynn and kids don't want to go. Gregg is looking at it as one more move before he retires, so it better be the right financial package. He doesn't want to coach forever. The cons for going to Bama are no real fan commitment to basketball; shite team next year; 2-3 year rebuilding plan; SEC is the SEC, cheating is almost an excepted practice...Bama fans probably alright with it if it yields results. WSU can probably get to 2.1 or 2.2M base, with incentives bringing it to 2.5+. The only reason he leaves is for the money. How much do you really need Gregg? Don't be a gun for hire. Be our coach where you are loved and respected. You have a great and predictable gig here. Don't screw up happy.

The words I was told was we will see how the week plays out. I think Fairhope is right. Buckle up and sit back. This could take a while.

Totally agree. I hope we land him I just wouldn't pick Alabama over a "basketball school" if all other things are equal.

That's your opinion....some people actively seeking out challenges than to take the easy way out.

I was about to post that. It seems like a pretty legit piece of info, and their numbers seem like what I'd expect.

I think all the "legit" info those guys have is coming from our own boards. I've seen those same numbers from our own fans. I don't think the WSU fans know anything. Their posts don't seem to have any real info and a lot of denial-based conjecture.

From BOL about that same poster:

quote:

from the same guy...

"I would say it's just ole' SHOXMVC spouting off at the keyboard again while sipping some Pappy Van Winkle, but that would be untrue. Look, regardless of any "source" claimed by any of us, it is still in Gregg's court. I would be confident in the financial, deadline and family feedback part."

AKA he doesn't know

I don't think its a stretch to believe any that. I believe the deadline part too. Marshall has control of this situation and there is no reason for him to rush anything.

quote:

The only reason he leaves is for the money.

If that is the case, Battle wouldn't have flown to Wichita. He could've emailed him the offer. If Marshall leaves, it'll be a combination of money, commitment to resources, getting back to the South, and being able to play in a big boy league.

I think we have a good chance to land him, but we aren't out of the woods yet. This thing could become Rich Rod 2.0 at any moment.

No one knows anything at this point. He could come out in two hours and say he's taking the job. He could come out Friday and say he's staying.

What we can assume is that the offer is on the table and the pitch has been made. Now, we wait.

At 4.2 mil for 6 years, he'll get a raise and/or a extension if we make the tournament in the first 2-3 years. At a minimum, he'll make 33.6 mil over the next 8 years (not including any incentives). That would be damn hard to turn down. He'll be 60, and could probably hang around til he's 62 to get 10 years in the state system.

We could, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I said last week that he'd probably be our coach by Monday. I assumed events were in motion behind the scenes and that there would a public "going through the motions" type of spectacle once Marshall lost to ND. It looks like negotiations really didn't start until this week and now he and his family are thinking about things. When everyone is on the same page and deals have been made, things happen very quickly. That doesn't seem to be happening here that just leads to believe nothing is a done deal.

Would love it if I'm wrong.

Yeah. This is the stage known as the "my cousin's best friend's sister's landscaper's significant other talked to Gregg's daughter and she said she doesn't want to leave"

If Anthony Grant's tenure proved anything, it proved that we'll give a coach time. Grant made 1 NCAA in 6 years. If he had just made one more, he'd probably be our coach right now.

Marshall can come to Alabama, have moderate success, and pretty be assured that he'll have 10 years with us. During that time, he'd make Top 5 money. Yeah, he wouldn't be invited to coach the US National Team but that's still a pretty attractive life. If he goes to somewhere like UNC or Duke, he won't be given a long leash. They'd have no problem kicking him to the curb after 3-4 seasons. That's if he actually gets a job like that. Its not a slam dunk that he be hired by a blue blood.

The ebb and flow of a coaching search will drive a fan nuts.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Twitter has made following this so much easier. The Saban search of 2006 involved Google news searches, blogs, and more message board rumors than today's search. It's much easier to follow. There is still a good amount of bullshite out there, but much better than coaching searches past.

In late December of 2006, if someone had thought to check out Kristin Saban's FB page, they would've learned that Saban was coming. She was posting about leaving Miami weeks before the NFL season ended.
