Both suck. The best large city in the South is Nashville with Charlotte in second. The best smaller city in the South is Charleston with Chattanooga in second.

As much as I hate Atlanta I'd much rather live there than New Orleans. Just for a visit, NOLA is better by a mile.

I think you could find somewhere better than Chattanooga second, even though I do like it there.

New Orleans is great to visit, but wouldn't want to live there.

Atlanta, wouldn't want to live there and it's not that fun to visit. I do typically stay at the 4 seasons when I visit ATL. But otherwise, it's meh.

So to answer the question given that the OP gave no context, NOLA.

SInce Atlanta has no real "center" like the French Quarter, it takes knowing it to really appreciate what it can offer. There are certainly plenty of suburban soul sucking going on, but there are some awesome enclaves both ITP and OTP as well.

I don't have a lot of experience with NOLA, and the one time I did go there I ended up vomiting all night, but it was an interesting city to visit at least. I hate seafood/fish so that always hampers my appreciation of Creole cuisine as well.

Nashville and Asheville are both very cool. I don'r get the love for Charlotte. Lake Norman is nice enough, but nothing else really has ever stood out for me in Charlotte.
