re: Thinking about the four team playoff, how long until we get to eight?

Perfect example this year. Michigan State, sitting at 8, has already lost to two of the top four teams. They have no business being in the discussion. Period. End of story.
But what if they beat those two teams in the playoff?

If you really think that then you may be beyond hope. 2 conferences run college football and everybody else just sides with 1 or the other like remoras on a shark.
There is one Big 5 conference without a CCG. You're being obtuse.

If you go to 6, then #7 and 8 will bitch. If you go to 8, then #9 and #10 will bitch. Someone will always bitch. Keep it at 4, let #5 and 6 bitch, but at least you have four teams that are truly worthy of playing for a national championship.
Get tired of that continual mantra. Yeah yeah, someone will always bitch if 64 or 2 teams. Bitching is not the issue but teams that deserve a shot.
We have 4 teams that are worthy of playing but 2 that are and are not.

Seems like, to me anyway, expanding to 8 teams is a little unfair to the teams that go through a guantlet of regular season play (i.e. anyone in the SEC) just to get to their CCG, and then have to play 2 extra games, risk injuries, etc., against teams from weaker conferences, (or against teams that shouldn't be there in the first place), just to get to the NCG.

System is fine. Do we really want the teams that would have been in contention for the 7th and 8th spots to be in the playoffs?
Posted on 12/10/14 at 10:24 am to higgs_boson
My argument against the playoff, from the beginning, was that I don't want it to be a mini-nfl. I love college football as it is (or was). The only reason it can co-exist with the NFL and be as popular as it is is because it is different. I don't like the NFL. I don't want to watch a bunch of 8-8 teams competing for a championship. The more teams we add, the more it will turn into a "who's hottest now?" competition. The regular season will eventually mean very little. At that point, I'll be done with football.

4 teams is plenty. The "new money" schools like TCU and Baylor need to go undefeated if they want to make the cut.

2011 chirp chirp
2011 is interesting case. If that happened today would Alabama have been left out.
It is hard to say because we don't really know how much weight the conference champs were given this year. It was enough to jump Ohio into the four.
Would there have been enough of scale for conference champs to leave Alabama out?
I could see a scenario like this soon.

Then win your conference/division and stop whining.
Bama was not deserving of being in that game. They were the best team on 1/9/12 in a rematch. They were not the best team that year. They did not deserve to be in the game and the whole thing was a farce.
A birth in the National Championship game or Playoff should be based on the body of work, not who might beat who in a single game. Anyone can win on any given Saturday - it doesn't mean that they deserve to play for a championship.
Alabama lost its shot when it lost at home that year and finished second in the SEC West. That is how it should have been. LSU should have played another conference champion, not a rematch against a team it already beat.
A 3 year HARD melt. So funny.

I guess for some the pain lasts longer for some than others?
I just wish we knew how much weight conference champs really have. Technically 1-6 are all either champs or co-champs.
What happens when a one loss SEC team is not conference champ?

Old news, but it seems a plurality of coaches would prefer eight to four playoff.

Last month, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported that 44 percent of the 103 FBS coaches he surveyed indicated they preferred an eight-team playoff, compared to 29 percent who liked the current format of four teams. Seventeen percent of coaches said they wanted a 16-team field.

This but I would add that as soon as the SEC champ, whoever it is, gets left out.
Probably the same goes for the Pac 12.

4 isn't enough, 6 isn't enough.
What happens when you have a killer division and the top 3 teams go 11-1 with losses to each other and to no-one else? It could have happened this year in the SEC West.
If you can't solve the 2008 Big 12 equation then you are theoretically leaving the potential best team in the country out of the playoff.
8 team playoff, no divisions, no conference championships. Every power 5 plays 9 conference games and plays their OOC against other Power 5 opponents. We're going to be paying our players so might as well seperate them from the have nots. You have a number of cross conference games that allow you a better idea over which is the top conference. You can now take each conference champion without fear of taking a 3 or 4 loss team, and the teams on the outside looking in played comparable schedules and although they can make an argument for ranking 8-5 they won't be able to claim they are a top 4 team. Like what can happen if you leave out 2 11-1 teams with one loss against a top 5 opponent.

I hope never.
Fans are so worried about 5-8 they don't care about screwing over 1-4.
I'm all for rewarding the teams at the top and rewarding a great regular season.
A large playoff ruins the regular season.
Games like last year's Iron Bowl would have been meaningless except for seeding.
This years' SEC championship would have meant nothing as Alabama could have lost and still gotten a birth.
The playoff needs to be small enough that every game matters and a single loss can eliminate you.
In an 8 team playoff that's not true, if you're #1 you're not falling out of the top 8 in a single game.
Falling out of the top 4 in a single game is always in the cards, which makes every game super critical.

Virginia Tech did beat one of them. You want to let them in too? "What if" is a dumb reason to start including lesser teams.

So you want to have a sliding number every year...4 teams one year, five teams the next, etc. Makes a lot of sense to me.
