Moving back to your hometown

I just found out that I got a promotion and I am moving to Northwest Florida. I from Dothan,AL originally and this is very close to my hometown where my family and wife's family live.
The closest I have lived to my family in almost 15 years was 2 hours away. It was much farther for the majority of that time. We are excited about moving back to be near our family and friends, but nervous about the change in family dynamics.
We are used to being very independent from our family. Has anyone else done something similar and how did it work out?

I moved back home after being gone for 6 years. I hate it but it probably has more to do with location than anything.

I've never really lived more than an hour from my family. I hate having them so close, but I wouldn't want to be too far. I think 2 hours away is the Goldilocks zone. That's close enough to visit them or get help when you want it, but far enough away that they don't want to drop in unannounced (like mine like to do).

I moved back to my hometown and don't really care for it. My job is here and it's going to take A LOT for me to give up the job I currently have. Frankly, there's just too much potential to get rich. Combine that with the freedom I have and it's going to be difficult to pull me away... That being said, I'd move to two cities within an hour of my job in a heartbeat, and just commute. The only reason I haven't is because I'm single and don't want to make that big of a change alone, but it's on my mind a lot.

My parents live in dothan, I'd love to be back in PC. It's not my hometown but I lived there for 6 years. I'd need a 40k raise to move back to my hometown.

It's awesome to have the grandparents so close but when you know everyone at the grocery store its annoying.

That's part of my issue. I'm a private person and sometimes that's not respected. I live within 5 minutes of a lot of my family, and they don't give a frick for the most part. I also live in a very public place and everybody knows my business. I've gotten comments about how often UPS drops something off. I'm just like wtf does it matter.

Which is why I now drive 20 minutes out of the way to avoid those conversations.
How's your mama doing?
What are your brothers doing?
YOU'RE MARRIED?!?

How old are your parents (either set), and are their siblings on either side that live in the area?
I have learned that as parents get older, you want to be closer, so you can get there ASAP if something were to happen.

Moved from L.A. in 1987 and couldn't possibly move back--even though my family's all dead and gone.
Sorry, but I wager you'll regret the move; it's like moving back to an earlier chapter in your life, only now you're stuck like a fly in amber. No thanks.

My parents are around 60. My wife's parents are closer to 70. They are all in good health.
I am very excited to be living close to my brother. His family will be very close.
One big upside is the use of the family beach house. We will only be about 45 minutes away.

This is one of my worries. I am also afraid of getting stuck. We average moving about every 2-3 years. I told my wife and parents going in that this is not a permanent move. I need to keep moving to advance in my career and I am not ready to give up my goals.

Oh … in that case, go for it.

Literally, my favorite thing about living in an urban area.. You still see people you know in public places but if you dont stop and speak it's understood that you're in a hurry and no one gets offended.. If I was back home and at Walmart and passed someone in the aisle without speaking they would probably send my mom a Facebook message asking if I was on drugs and call me a snob behind my back.

My dad loved that song. When I'm feeling sentimental and miss the old man, I find that song and listen to it. I'm gonna pull it up on Youtube now at work
