Make the first rounds bowls...everyone wins?

Then there will be a cry for ten teams...then twelve, then sixteen....hell...lets make it a 64 team playoff

With the present 4 teams, you're getting bitching from #'s 5-6-7. With 6 teams, all you'd be doing is adding additional unhappy teams to the mix. Numbers 1 & 2 will usually always be easily identified. The rest, as is evident in today's polls, will always have a legit bitch.

Making the playoff needs to be difficult, otherwise the regular season means nothing.
You really want 9-3 teams making the playoff?
You want in? Win your fricking games.
You're trying to be national champions, don't lose a bunch of games.

6 is not as perfect as you think. Teams will be bitching that they didn't get the bye, and teams will be bitching that missed the playoff. There are actually more chance for the committee screw up.
I disagree, because making the playoff is easily the most important thing. If you get shafted out of the playoff over a team with very similar credentials, that's a way bigger issue than getting ranked 3rd and a team with similar credentials getting the 2 ranking and a bye. I didn't say there would be nothing people would argue about, but it would be a much better system for not totally screwing teams out of a deserved shot.

Here is my tweak: 5 team playoff with 4 and 5 playing for the right to be in vs 1.
My point is most years there is maybe 3 teams that are above the others and 4 and 5 are clearly above the rest but it's difficult to separate from one another.
Thoughts?

Problem with this is the Independents and Big 12...they have no conference championship game. If you go to 8 games...5 Conference Champions, 3 wild cards. Conference champions give 9-3 teams a chance to play their way in. The wild cards give the independents i.e. Notre Dame/BYU, teams that lose in Conference Championship Game i.e. 2003 Oklahoma or teams that don't win their division i.e. Bama in 2011.

8 would suck balls and I hope it never happens, but just like with everything else money will make that decision.
I think 8 is the perfect number myself. And I fully believe we will be at eight within a few years.
Six bowl games are quarterfinals and semifinals + national championship game. Playoffs would look like this right now:
Mississippi State vs. Ohio State in Atlanta, Georgia (Peach Bowl)
Oregon vs. Baylor in Tempe, Arizona (Fiesta Bowl)
Florida State vs. Arizona State in Miami, Florida (Orange Bowl)
TCU vs. Alabama in Dallas, Texas (Cotton Bowl)
MSU/OSU vs. TCU/Bama in New Orleans
Oregon/Baylor vs. FSU/ASU in Pasadena
Auburn, Ole Miss and UCLA fighting to get in these last couple of weeks. Would be awesome!

I used to want an 8-team or even 16-team playoff, but now that my team has a chance to make it, I see how playing the extra game or two is less desirable.
I wouldn't mind proving myself to #4, but having to play #8 first just seems unnecessary. There's a higher chance for injury which would prevent the two best teams from playing each other at full strength.
When you think about it, seldom have there been more than 3 teams considered the best in CFB for any given year. Even more rare have there been 4. Most of these BCS years and even in the pure poll years #5-8 had little to no argument to be #1.
Still, I'm not hugely against a bigger playoff. It would add a little bit of the basketball NCAA upset fun to major college football.

Hell, my wife and I make a damn good living and (assuming MSU's best case scenario) I'm trying like hell to determine how I can afford to to go to the SEC CG, the first playoff game, and the NC game. And I have advantage because I live 1.5 hours from NO so I could make the 1st round a day trip. In addition, I can fly for free to the other venues due to flyer miles, but still, that going to add up to be a ton of cheese.
You should go all in on this year. Might be a while before you have to expense this again. Just saying.

extra games for a six or 8 team playoff - could cause travel problems
say oregon is picked & has to go to miami, then new orleans & final in texas - fans cannot afford the $
the presidents of the universities make the decisions & they will not extend the season
if you make it a 64 team playoff - someone is always bitching ie baseball & basketball

I like the 4 team playoff. It makes the regular season that much more dramatic. With 4 teams you feel as if you have a better shot to go. With a 6 or 8 team the regular season might not have as many games that are IT like Ole Miss Auburn

Why not immediately undo all the paperwork and go back to the BCS....?
It doesn't hurt 1 team more than the BCS does, but it certainly is designed to minimize the chances of 1 conference dominating when they've legitimately earned the right!
Just my worthless two cents, tho!

Why? If they beat you than you were not the best team out of the 8 to begin with.

with 5 power conferences, 6 is the way to go...even 5 could work...4 vs 5 would be a play-in game
You have,
4 power conferences with CCG's
1 power conference without a CCG
1 IND school who is "half in" a conference
4 CCG's as defacto first round is already in place
2 playoff games are already in place
You already have a 8 team playoff with substitution after the 4 CCG's to patch the final four as needed. Project out 10 - 20 years from now...
Pick A or B for each possibility
ITEM #1
A) Notre Dame will still be IND
or
B) Notre Dame will become a full member of the ACC
ITEM #2
A) Bottom 5 members of the Big 12 will have major brand status
or
B) Bottom 5 members of the Big 12 will still be cellar dwellers
ITEM #3
A) Big 12 will have gotten back to 12 and expanded to new markets by entering new states
or
B) Big 12 will still be at 10 teams and limited markets of OK, KS, IA, and WV
ITEM #4
A) Big 12 will even exist in 10 - 20 years
or
B) PAC 16 becomes a reality and 4 top level Big 12 schools join the PAC
Often overlooked in conference realignment is the true nature is not expansion, but contraction. Fewer top schools mean bigger slices for fewer schools and will pressure bottom lines to increase revenue. Chicago in the B1G, Idaho in the PAC, and Tulane in the SEC are all examples of schools who have dropped out of conferences when keeping up was no longer acceptable.
If you go beyond 4 now, and keep the CCG's, then you are inviting lower conferences a seat at the table which is pretty much what the playoff system was invented to eliminate. The value of a playoff MNC in football is to protect the exclusive nature of the product to protect the long term value. Making the playoff accept more than 4 teams is opening Pandoras Box and that would not bode well long term for the SEC. Thinking more than 4 gets multiple SEC teams in is is not the answer because the rest of the country will resist this.
If your vision is
Team 1 = SEC vs Team 8 = I ND
Team 2 = PAC vs Team 7 = PAC
Team 3 = ACC vs Team 6 = SEC
Team 4 = B1G vs Team 5 = SEC
The reality is probably more like
If your vision is
Team 1 = SEC vs Team 8 = I ND
Team 2 = PAC vs Team 7 = B 12
Team 3 = ACC vs Team 6 = CUSA
Team 4 = B1G vs Team 5 = AAC

Bring back the BCS, it worked. As for more, hell no. Stop thinking about left out and shift to who is undeserving. Why do people assume left out?

I've always wanted the 6 team playoff. And reseed after the first two games. Reward the 1 and 2.
