Saban has been a demigod to the Alabama faithful. Unfortunately he has one flaw: His defenses can't stop spread offenses. Will Gus continue his dominance over Saban or will Saban finally figure things out? If LSU can fix their offense, is this the year they go back to the SECCG (the real championship) ? This should be quite an interesting year.

Bama fans will bring up Ole Miss, but they kind of suck.

We stopped it well enough. If we had a kicker who was worth a damn, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The problem is the special teams, not the defense.

Really? Just because he has occasionally lost to a few spread teams does not mean he "can't" stop them. It wasn't as if Auburn's O completely destroyed the Bama D. Sure we lost the game, but not entirely because of our defense. Bama shutout OM's spread offense. Bama manhandled Urban Meyer's spread offenses at UF. The only thing that has consistently truly been a problem for Saban's D has been Johnny Football.

If we don't do a better job of stopping it this year, we'll just redouble our efforts to have it outlawed next offseason.

Here's a better question:

If Alabama does figure out spread offenses and shuts them down

Is all truly lost for anyone not named Alabama?

No this is not the "end" of Saban not will it ever be until he retires. But bama has indeed, despite some of these posts, struggled multiple times vs spread - oklahoma and A&m burned them this year. Overall I think the most import test thing is for Saban to get faster D ends and OLB's like lsu does, instead of the type that are built to stop a Stanford or michie state style offense. That's why manziel ran in circles in the backfield so easily was bc all the linemen were way too slow but vs lsu he couldn't do that. But dashawn hand should certainly help the cause

Alabama's main problem with stopping the HUNH is not having a true man up the middle to collapse the pocket. The way LSU, Auburn, and Stanford stopped Oregon was an inside presence to take away the middle, making more predictable play calls to the outside and rely more on the pass. I said in another thread that one of Alabama's main problems last year was no consistency at the JACK position and at NT. You get a guy like Josh Chapman, who dominated in 2011, helped take away the run. Auburn pulled a guard and didn't have to double team Ivory because he didn't demand it like Cody, Chapman, and Aussie. If you get a dominant man in the middle, you can limit the big plays and not have the defense on their heels all the time cause you're in 3rd-and-long instead of 3rd-and-manageable.

Malzahn's offense and spread/option offenses in general are simply and not hard to figure out. It's all about blocking and execution. You either have the players on defense who can match up or you don't. Alabama certainly has the talent on defense to match up. Heck, Georgia had Auburn beat last season and pissed the game away with stupid defense in the defensive backfield and our defensive was definitely no better than middle of the pack in the SEC.

To me, Alabama needs to be working on innovation on offense and I'm sure Saban recognizes it which is why he hired Kiffin. I would probably move Yeldon to flanker; the guy is tall and just runs too upright for a tailback. Henry and Drake should be the RB tandem IMHO.

I think it was a difference in the DL honestly

Alabama always has these huge DL that are only really good for eating up space. Not that many athletic big men. That was the difference in our game I think. Jernigan was pushing Auburns OL around and disrupting plays a lot. They couldn't handle his combination of size and speed.

If Saban gets ahold of some DL that have some agility they'll be fine

I think saban has figured out spread O's. He just can't do much with good ones............especially fast paced ones. He lives off of subbing in for situations. He can't do that against pace teams. That is the main reason he tried to get the rules changed.

Saban is finished. I applaud your astute observation. You are ahead of the curve and it is only a matter of time.

Clearly. This is the end of Saban.
