ESPN had three writers offer 10 fixes each to college football, be it rule changes or other assorted differences.
Maisel's third point:
Spot on. The recent rule change in the play clock has caused the quality of the game to suffer in a major unintended way.
Maisel's third point:
quote:
3. The play-clock rule amended Nick Saban had a point. Before college football adopted the 40-second play clock in 2008, the umpire stood over the ball for a short period of time before he "wound up" the 25-second play clock. Up-tempo offenses succeed in part by preventing the defense from substituting. This is what's best for the game? The intent of the 40-second clock, to speed up the time of the game, sped up the game itself. I'd rather watch an offense and defense match strategy than watch which team has the most organized sideline. Amend the rule to allow the umpire to stand over the ball for 10 seconds until both teams have had a chance to sub. Let an up-tempo team win because it wears out the defense once the ball is snapped, not before it's snapped.

but what's this got to do with injuries.
I think we all know there is a group of people out there that want a slower game. Glad he just said it and didn't try to dress it up with feeble minded bullshite.

Dumb statement is dumb. This hasn't changed. The only difference is some offenses have changed their strategy to also outpace a defense and catch them off guard.

so which is it?... are we doing this for player safety, or b/c you like it better?
The changes made in 2008 were good for the game... it streamlined the process... there was too much variance on how long some crews would stand over the ball. Taking this out of their hands was one less way for officials to dictate play/control the game... that is a good thing, imo.

They still do this, only difference is the 40 second clock starts before he does this, rather than a 25 second clock after

That Maisel is one smart dude. Add the unnecessary injury risk to his argument and you've got the NCAA nodding in agreement.
