There's the familiar buffoonery we know and love. Wouldn't be an offseason without it.

Holy. Shat. What inspires these dumbasses to possibly throw away all hopes of a future at the University and possibly the pros. I understand a lot of them don't come from great situations, but frick. It is not that hard to go to school and try to get by on your scholarship.

It was bound to happen sooner or later...

I was starting to get worried that things were different. That's a load off my back

Four Georgia football players, including promising safety Tray Matthews, have been charged with multiple counts of theft by deception and were in the Clarke County Jail on Monday night.
Of all things... Theft by deception. Are players really go after those odd and obscure charges don't they?

I think Matthews' time Athens might be drawing to a close. He was already in the dog house.

What the hell is "Theft by Deception"? And how is it different from regular "Theft"?
Litigator, Break these charges down into layman's terms and explain their repercussions, please. Thanks.

I always thought theft by deception was like using a check to pay for something that you know the account is no longer open. Kind of like a Catch Me If you Can type of crap. But obviously these guys were not smart enough to get away with it very long. Wasn't Matthews all ready in trouble?

Theft by deception is fraud.

Theft by deception could mean using a stolen or forged credit card, or obtaining credit under false pretenses.

Basically theft by deception involves obtaining property by deceit or trickery rather than just outright stealing it. Here's the GA Code section on it. LINK. The various types of theft are further explained here. LINK. In the law theft by deception is really no better or worse than plain old theft.
All of it falls under the general category of theft but a BIG key is usually whether it is a felony or misdemeanor which can also be significant in how the school or athletic department treats it.
According to the article it appears that the crimes are misdemeanors so that's good news for the players to the extent you can get any good out of this type of situation.
