I can't say for sure how good it will be. I can tell you I expect an improvement next season and a large improvement in 2015. Now whether that happens remains to be seen but I do like the way our recruiting has addressed the current situation. We filled all but 2 positions of need so far with quality recruits and I expect that to be resolved next year. I don't think we will be top 10 on defense by any means but I do think we will field a competent defense the next few years and hopefully a top defense in yhe next 3 to 5 years.

Now for the rant answer we gonna win it all and frick LSU

I clicked on this a few minutes ago. Then I started really thinking about the question.

It's true that the last few years our D has sucked. In general, A&M has had more success on defense than offensively. We played some pretty damn good defense over the last 40 years.

When we came to the SEC we had a good run defense, it was our pass defense that screwed us in the Big 12 the year before we came over. Ags run defense was pretty good for first year in the SEC. SEC teams didn't have the passing attack to take advantage of our weakness last year. This year the D line was huge problem for us. It led to all kinds of other problems.

It should be very much improved from a talent perspective. Jury is still out on Sumlin as a HC when it comes to D. This coming year we should see a vast improvement.

All the freshmen that played last year have to be improved coming back this year. The only way is up. I think it'll take 2 years to be a respected defense.

Next year - about average, maybe a little below average.
Two years - Good.
Three years - Very Good. Back to Wrecking Crew status.

We've got a serious talent infusion coming in, and we have so many freshman that played last year. We will get better, but it takes time. Lots of players are pretty good as upperclassmen, but just not ready as underclassmen.

Based on talent alone, you would think a lot better. In 2009 and 2010, our 22nd and 17th ranked recruiting classes only had two 4*'s on defense each year. In 2011, our 35th ranked class somehow managed 3 4*'s.

That's just a little background on what we've been working with.

That's a very bold statement.

That's seven 4 stars from 2009-2011. Of our ten defensive signees this year (not including Collins, who won't play), nine are 4 stars.

i don't see how they could be any worse, so just based on that you'd have to think they will be better. I don't think you'll ever see their D reach elite status under Sumlin though.

You think they're gonna improve that much in 8 months?

talent may have been the issue, but i honestly think the problem is with snyder and his defensive staff.

i watched my fair share of a&m games the last 2 years (yeah, i'm ag-sessed), and that staff just isn't great with adjustments.

Now that being said, there are certainly individual bright spots to be optimistic about, with Claiborne, Obioha, and a few other guys progressing. They should be really good in a year or two.

Also, the secondary definitely needs a spark...something. DSG would have provided a huge one at safety, though...big loss there. CB wise, Ellis will be a good one, i think...and Harvey will probably have to be a difference maker sooner rather than later.

but i'm probably wrong about all this, so yeah

seriously wondering how LSU & aTm defenses will compare in 2015 and beyond. Could be some damn good games in the future if aTm can get the right personnel and players in place

Myles Garrett will be a beast. With the way A&M recruits it is only a matter of time before they are a factor every single year. Nice job Aggies

Meh, nowadays we would do that chant for a top 50 defense.

Mike Sherman whiffing at DT 2 years in a row doomed us to some misery on D.

The last 2 classes have been pretty good on D so a significant improvement should be expected going forward.
