This is their fault. School systems/workplaces close based on what the weather people say. When it was coming down heavy at 10 am and the high today is in the 20s... doesn't it make sense that it's going to be a bit more than a "dusting"?
Yep. And it's still coming down hard right now.
Figure I'm staying at the office overnight tonight.

When I worked downtown, years ago, we loved the snow days. Company would put us up (normally at the Remont) and we'd knock down plenty of alcohol in the hotel bar.

James Spann just came on and called his forecast a dramatic error, similar to what happened in 1982 (I am old enough to remember that screwup).
Wants the focus to be not jumping on the weather people (for now), but getting help for people who need it in the big population centers (Birmingham, etc.) who were not expecting this crap.

I can't remember being caught this flatfooted. They really fricked this up.

He just said they just declared Birmingham a civil disaster area. The news is just insane right now

I can. To the tune of 19" of snow, though.

Have seen that written a few times, anybody a little older remember what happened in '82?

Lmao....you were so disappointed this morning because there was no snow in the ham

If anyone has read Isaac's Storm about the Galveston Hurricane in 1902 (?), this is what it reminds me of

Terrible ice storm. I don't remember the forecast though, and how badly they missed it. I do remember the smell of pine and pine trees down all over my neighborhood though.

I think Spann just mentioned how it was more of an error of time, when it came much earlier than expected. No one expected this at all

How bad is it? Anyone have any pics to post?

Yep glad I didn't go to class this morning. Everyone else is spending the night at work or school tonight.

From ABC 33/40:
quote:
A very bad situation is in progress across the Birmingham Metro area and much of Central Alabama, reminiscent of the 1982 Winter Storm.
Tens of thousands of people are trying to make it home at this hour and roads are gridlocked.
Traffic is at a standstill all over the area. In the Tuscaloosa area as well as across the Birmingham Metro area.
Wrecks not being worked by most local jurisdictions unless there are injuries.
If you are stuck on the road, it’s best not to abandon your vehicle. Take it slow and easy, think about what large hills are along your route and try to avoid them.
Warming stations will be set up for stranded motorists this afternoon and tonight.
A recent Tweet mentioned moving one mile in 90 minutes on Valleydale Road in Shelby County.
If you are in a warm, safe place, stay there until the traffic abates.
Cell phone networks are jammed, so be patient.
The snow is over in places like Hamilton, Fayette, Jasper, Double Springs and Cullman. Roads are slippery in these areas, but generally not as snowpacked.
Light snow continues in the I-59 corridor, including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Gadsden.
Heavier snow is falling from Hale through Bibb, Perry, Chilton, Shelby, Coosa, Talladega, Clay, Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph Counties.
A wintry mix is falling south of this area from Marengo through Dallas, Autauga and Elmore Counties. The preicpitation has changed to snow at Selma in Dallas County.

These are the times a city like Chicago mocks us openly and laughs in our collective faces.
Snow - we haz a little of it and complete disaster and panic set in.

Everyone missed this one. never more than a dusting forecast.
seriously, the amount of precipitation isn't that much different from forecast . but it just makes a world of difference with the temperatures where they are.
