You know what REALLY pisses me off about 2011?

Lost in all the "mulligan" and "21-0" bickering is the fact that we were able to witness the greatest clash of defenses in this generation - TWICE.
Anybody who truly appreciates the game should respect that. We can talk about missed field goals in game 1 or JJ in game 2, but we may never again see a game where BOTH defenses were at such a level.
I'm sure it's easier for me to see it this way because the end result favored my team...but that 2011 LSU defense deserves better than mockery and constant talk of mulligans. When your team can't cross the 50 and you STILL haven't let the team in your end zone until the game was almost over, your defensive accomplishment is overshadowed. It shouldn't be. It was an honor to see defense played like that - so incredible that today the SEC is still known for our defense in a year that none of us could stop anyone.

The two best teams of the SEC national championship streak, imo. It's unfortunate both had to play in the same year

Doesn't bother me in the least.

Agreed. People outside of the SEC were bitching about the 9-6 game, but in all honesty, that was a beautifully played game by both defenses.
I still smile every time I think about that Eric Reid INT down near the goal line. Incredible effort to steal that one away from the WR.

Amen, I tell people all the time that our D played their asses off that game and I get strange looks a lot more than you would think.

you didn't deserve to be there

This is true. Two defenses that combined for probably 25 NFL players.

I actually really appreciate this and thank you. That 2011 team was one of the best college football teams I have ever seen and any other year would have gone undefeated and won a national championship. What probably stings the most is the complete lack of respect shown it by Alabama fans as though the team sucked and was horrible or something.
Just one part of the reason why I can't stand such a large number of Alabama fans. Their team wins a game and they mock and deride the opposition as though they are horrible.
The truth is that there were two great teams that year and they went 1-1 against each other with Alabama getting the better of LSU in the last game. But, you are right. Bama could only manage 5 FGs until the end when the defense was completely worn out.
Bama was the better team that day, no doubt. But, it doesn't mean that LSU sucked that year, all of the 21-0 garbage notwithstanding.
Great post, CL.

The 2 best teams in the BCS era. Unfortunate they fielded them the same season.

Will there ever be another 6-6 game ever in the SEC?

I fully believe both teams fielded their best team ever in the same year.
It sucked for 5 teams:
1. LSU- lost out on a national title and perfect season
2. Alabama- lost out on a conference title and perfect season
3. Arkansas- lost their only two games to the above two teams
4. Oklahoma State- missed out on a shot at a national title
5. Tennessee- somehow drew 1-3 out of the west and lost by a combined score of 124-20.

The reason I have no respect for the average Gump is because he doesn't RESPECT THE GAME. I applaud the OP for understanding the unique nature of what we witnessed that year, and having respect for BOTH teams.
LSU obviously had no chance in a rematch. The psychology of cfb ensures that when a game that close is decided, the winner can never get "up" enough for a rematch. The CFN perspective that it was a split series is the correct one, not the Phyllis-centric RMFTR douchery that Gumps have run with every day since. Karma is sitting back even as we speak, deciding how and when to even the Universe out. And when it happens (and it will happen) I expect LSU fans will work overtime pouring that salt in the wounds and the whole cycle will just continue on ad infinitum.
