Coming from an Ole Miss fan's perspective, I think he is okay. But he betrayed Arkansas and I think that may be the reason

He was a high-school wizard in the state of Arkansas. The guy took over as head coach at Springdale high-school in 2001, and then proceeded to take said school to state championships in 2 of his last 4 years (winning one in 2005).
A lot of people don't like him from his time at Shiloh Christian. The school he coached at before he went to Springdale.
Personaly, I have no problems with Gus. We even lost to Shiloh 42-0 my senior year but I don't hold it against him. He's a very good coach but he's a very polarizing figure in our state. Arkansas has long been his dream job but unfortunately it is never going to happen.

frick Gus. That's what up.
It seriously all started with him taking the Shiloh job and this rise to power out of Springdale First Baptist into some behemoth mega church Armani Ronnie Joel Osteen wannabe.
It mixes a lot of deep seated factors and clashing GOBN with the new economy, new media, and the outside influences of the Ivy League MBA's and their East Coast/West Coast ideas in changing NWA.
Alot of it is pure jealousy and the shitty way Gus and Shiloh conducted themselves in all walks of life. You want to do more business, join First Baptist and get your kid into Shiloh. You have a promising athlete in Jr. High, well here's a partial tuition waiver to Shiloh, oh and it wouldn't be a good idea to start a drywall business? Brother Joe BOb is building 60 new duplexes and needs a sub.
So add in all of this change is what has been traditionally a disenfranchised part of the country and the preacher is wearing $2000 suits on TV and all of this money rolling in is being used to syphon kids and families out of the small towns they grew up in, the division between the "ins and outs" in Arkansas got further apart and some of it deservedly so because Gus is a slimeball POS, but some also no deservedly he became a scapegoat of sorts.
Now people didn't like his smarmy arse at Shiloh, when he moved on to Springdale at pushed the talent to the public school it wasn't such a big deal because they were Springdale kids to begin with, but when you involve our beloved Razorbacks and involve the entire damn state with your High School drama queen horseshite, it becomes something of a monster that can never be reigned in.
It would be equally awesome to have Gus at Arkansas and equally destructive. Gus is now a turncoat and a blasphemer for using the Bible to shield his antics. I'm atheist so I don't give a shite, but I do feel that people that use religion as either a crutch or a diversion are the worst kind of people on the planet.
The fracture is so deep over Gus in Arkansas he couldn't have been chosen. Auburn was obviously the right choice for him given their penchant for working outside of the rules system and willingness to grasp any advantage possible. The guy's a maniac, Arkansas just isn't in the cards for him and it's a shame considering how many great football coaches come from here but we seem to never be able to capitalize on their talents.

Seems like some crazy shite went on with highschool football fans and Gus.
Seems like he's been drama free since coming to auburn and by all accounts is a reasonable guy so I guess we just got lucky.

I've hated him since he was at Shilo where boosters payed tuition for players in a conference where small town teams had players having to play both ways all while Gus ran up the score. Still throwing the ball with a huge lead and leaving starters in to pad stats. Also don't agree how he used 18 yo to break into college just to desert them a year later. He always came off as a looking out for myself no matter what type guy. That's my reason. You people don't like it, too bad. I've put up with him a hell of a lot longer than you.

At the end of the day that is what it pretty much boils down to as the root cause.
I know a lot of people in NWA that despise him to this day because he recruited a lot of the best talent away from the small schools in the area and then turned around and beat the shite out of all of us with those guys.
We were 2A when I was a senior and Shiloh was 1A. They were forced to play up at our level because the teams in their conference refused to play them anymore. They played our entire conference for their "conference games" but their record went to their 1A conference. It was a really odd setup because they won their 1A conference by beating everyone in our 2A conference.

Every private school in the country that has any football success gets blamed for illegal recruiting. It is the same petty, jealousy shite that you see from college football fans when a recruit chooses a school other than their favorite.
Feel free to hate him, just know that your justification for doing so appears petty and reflects more poorly on you than him.

I don't dislike Gus Malzahn and I think he's a really good coach. His "disciples" are what turns a lot of Arkansans off, though it's not his choice they choose to be that way.
Personally, I know one person that practically worships him, though it's probably more evident around the Springdale area. It is very strange.
But honestly, I don't understand the hate.

Some think he never deserved the OC job and should've just gotten a job as a position coach. It bred infighting on the staff.
Some think he made too many promises we couldn't keep to Mustain, Williams and Cleveland, which bred resentment from and towards them. Some also think he didn't do enough to quell their parents' involvement, either.
Some have a bitter taste in their mouths for the way pretty much the entirety of the city of Springdale turned on the program after Mustain, Williams and Malzahn left after the 2006 season. Many Springdale people/Malzahn fanboys from his days at SCS/SHS gave up their season tickets and swore off the Hogs.
A lot of people dislike him for his (alleged) part in Camgate and the 2010 season.
A lot of people don't like the fact that he was pretty successful at mining Arkansas for recruits while at both Tulsa and Auburn.
A lot of people didn't care for the fact he spent all of his lone season at ASU taking potshots at tFlagship and trying to gin up a nonexistent rivalry, even going as far as saying that ASU-UA should play at War Memorial (laughable). He even spouted a bunch of nonsense about turning ASU into "the Boise of the South."
A lot of Hog fans who either also root for or graduated from ASU were extremely turned off by him bolting after one year, if anything because talked about year about how it was home and about how he and Kristi were "in it for the long haul" and all that nonsense.
For the most part, a great number of our fans didn't want him because he had/has two things against him that made firing Nutt almost impossible: he's a homegrown boy with deep ties among powerful people in the state and he has an entire town/city in his back pocket (he has Springdale, Nutt had Little Rock). Like I've said before, if Bert sucks after 3 years, he's probably gone; if Malzahn would've sucked after 3 years, his allies would have been right there to save him.

Eh they actually did recruit. I sat in a room with my best friend and listened to him have a conversation with someone from Shiloh about transferring there to play. Obviously the calls weren't coming from Gus himself but there were calls being made.

Keihl Frazier was 100% recruited from my hometown. Nothing secret about it

You're a West Fork guy? Did not know that at all.

Sounds like some Hogs need to get over it and move on.
Gus is a good guy and a winner. When he leaves AU, i hope we throw him a parade.
