So I was thinking about the possibility of Malzahn bolting to Texas. If that happens Richt should try to snag Ellis Johnson away from Auburn. He put SC's defense on the map and turned around a horrible Auburn defense in one season. What say you Dawg nation?

I wanted him the first time around but I kinda wanna keep the 3-4
He runs the 4-2-5, right? I guess I could dig that but I still wanna make the 3-4 work

I'm on board. He actually knows how the star/spur position is supposed to be played.

it' no different than willie martinez or brian van gorder.
pressure the qb with a 4 man pass rush (ie. my 4 on defense are better than your 5 on offense), and good things happen.
But if the 4 man pass rush doesn't dominate, then you get van gorder's career after UGA (or willie without 40 sacks like we had in 2007).
we don't need ellis. his defense gives up about 70 more yards per game against the SEC than we currently do this year.

Auburn already has a new contract on the table for him.

Me too but the problem is finding the right man to implement the scheme on a level the youngsters can pick up quickly. Saban does it each season so it seems to reason a Sabanite could do it because they would have seen first hand his delivery system, BUT we have that in Grantham and I'm not sure why he has such a dropoff. Other than his version is just too complicated.

That and I don't think he's all that good at game planning. Or adjustments. Honestly I bet he's a bad father and husband as well. If he has kids and hasn't eaten them yet.
Bastard.
Bastard.

Yeah Grantham and Saban have different philosophies. Grantham runs a one gap I believe and is exteremely Blitz heavy. I'm not sure if Saban runs a one or two gap, but the difference schematically is that he doesn't blitz as much. He's more about maintaining gap integrity. Discipline.

And Texas has the money to pay the buyout, the furtile recruiting ground, the history of sticking with a coach until every ounce of championship is out of him, it's own network, and less competition in conference. Plus Malzahn is from Texas.

That sarcasm DGD??

See.. I think he leaves on Auburn history alone. They put crazy pressure on their coach to win or you are out. Other than that he has to compete with everybody for recruits at Auburn which makes it harder.
Yeah I see him taking the money and moving home.

I think Mack Brown still has a job, though, right?

Don't you think that's because the season is not over?
Who else would be a better fit for Texas? I'm thinking if I'm the AD for Texas I get real aggressive and go after the guy that turned an 0-8 SEC team into a West division champion and conference contender in ONE season.
My next question is, given Malzahn's success will Ellis entertain a lateral move to another SEC team?

Why don't we just install blue hedges around the field instead it is just as realistic an option.

Dunno. They seem to have turned things around enough that I think it'd be hard to oust him now. It could all rest on whether or not they take down Baylor.

Well then he's a goner!
Will Georgia ever turn into one of those schools that sets the bar high and drops a coach for lack of production after a couple seasons. I don't think so...continuity is their montra! So unless we find a diamond in the rough DC we seem destined for mediocrity.
One thing is for sure given the season we just had and our defensive showing it would be a miracle turnaround for us to win doing the same thing on Defense next season.

1) Don't think Gus goes to AU and 2) Ellis would entertain a lateral move cause he sure as shite isn't gonna be a HC ever again. Don't mean it's likely but the dude did just dreadful at So Miss

I get what your saying Mean, but his defense would have kept the game from being close given the offense we've had ALL season. Yes and that is with the injuries. THREE games would have easily been won and in the fourth against Mizzou who knows, but I'd take being 11-1 over 8-4 any day.
That happens and we would be the team going to the SECCG plain and simple.
So if Ellis is doable, I'd snatch him up if I didn't see improvement after next season. (Concede to the youth excuse this year and let that rope pull tight the next season if things didn't change.)
Our secondary screwed us. Third down stops were atrocious! And honestly our guys didn't seem prepared at times.

It's his first year - what do you expect? The Iron Curtain? From his AU bio:
quote:
While defensive coordinator at South Carolina, Johnson also served as linebackers coach. In his final season with the Gamecocks, his defense ranked third nationally, allowing just 268 yards per game. Under Johnson, South Carolina finished in the Top 15 nationally in total defense three times. In addition to the 2011 mark of No. 4 overall, the USC defense ranked No. 13 in scoring defense (18.8 points per game) and second in pass defense (133 yards per game).
Plus, we know he won't be trying a HC job again any time soon and he knows all the teams we play. I would jump all over this guy if he came open. He's like Muschamp without all the crazy bullshite.
