Oh it counts, it just doesn't prove you are a great coach. Fulmer's all time record against Alabama was primarily due to the incompetence he was coaching against.
Wait a second... I thought Alabama's bad stretch was due to a witch hunt led by Fulmer and Kramer?

Federal trial testimony showed Tenn bid on Means as well. Why do you suppose Kramer never turned Tenn in?

He doesn't have to prove sh!t. He won 2 SEC titles, 1 National title, had a 152-52 record as head coach, and is in the college football hall of fame.
Its over now. Deal with it.

As a Vol fan I see it that way. Odd thing about Updyke is that he is older. Most older Bammers can handle success and defeat with class. The younger ones do dumb stuff like the teabagging the LSU fan. Like him or not attacking Fulmer is one thing. It kind of comes as expected with the huge salaries. But Fulmers daughter should be left alone period.

You are right. I do love people that put themselves in the public spotlight and then complain about the repercussions.

What did UT do wrong in the incident? Did they pay the player/coach anything? There were also other schools in the bidding as well, correct? did they get any immunity for testimony also?

I see the asterisk coming. You cant win. If in a few years Saban retires before Butch has us rolling then the but, but, but Butch had a losing record against Saban. You can only compare records against time they are employed. And make no mistake about it. From 90s to early 2000s no one liked seeing Fulmer on the opposing sidelines because it meant loss for your team 75% of the time.

I love the Tennessee week. I can't wait until BDS smells like cigars.

Fulmer piqued Kramer's interest enough to kick the SEC office into an investigative mode, and later lined up potential witnesses to chat up lead NCAA investigator Rich Johanningmeier. All of this is clear from an exhaustive paper trail of documents uncovered in a lawsuit that offers a rare glimpse into the underbelly of an NCAA probe.
In faxes (at least six, between April 13 and Sept. 16, 1998) to the SEC commissioner, Fulmer lays out how Alabama allegedly is busting the rulebook. The documents, typed on Tennessee football letterhead, are variously labeled "Confidential" and "For Your Eyes Only!!!" Each cover sheet is addressed to "Coach Kramer."
Kramer forwarded the information to ex-FBI agent Bill Sievers, then under contract to the conference, who in turn hired a private eye to work the case in Memphis. It is apparent Fulmer was frustrated and consumed by Young. In a memo to Kramer, Fulmer rehashed Young's ties to the late Bear Bryant, offering up phone numbers, addresses and points of contact in a who's who of players Young allegedly bought -- "usually defensive linemen that are black and poor."
"[Young] is very wealthy and often drinks a lot and brags about his boys he gets to go to Alabama," Fulmer wrote to Kramer.
quote:
"All the main players were there," Lang said. "Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Arkansas. They all came to Trezevant, and that's when it all started."
Among the coaches was Ole Miss assistant Kurt Roper.
"Kurt was new to Ole Miss, and I wasn't really paying him much attention, so I think he felt left out", Lang said. "So he tracked me down as I was walking down to the football field and said, 'Coach, we're new at Ole Miss and we need to be able to recruit with the big boys. Tell me what we need to do to get Means.'
Lang talked to each of the coaches when that day was done. All of them, he said, indicated they'd be willing to do "whatever it takes" to get Means
quote:
But Lang said Alabama wasn't the only school that bid on Means. The others were:
Arkansas: Danny Nutt and Fitz Hill were the two Arkansas assistants in charge of recruiting Means. "They offered me a job to be the defensive line coach at Arkansas, plus the money Logan had already given me, which was about $80,000."
Documents obtained by the Commercial Appeal corroborate Lang's story.
Tennessee: Assistant Pat Washington was in charge of recruiting Means.
"The first he talked about was $50,000, and then $75,000.

SCAR was the final nail in Phat Phil's coffin ... not Bama.
SCAR got Johnny Majors fired and replaced by Phat Phil. SCAR got Phat Phil phired and replaced by Lane Kiffin.
It's all been part of our master plan.

And Kramer, being a Tenn boy, sure wasn't interested in investigating anyone else despite the fact there was corroborating evidence they were doing underhanded things.
In any case. Things turned out best. Bama cleaned up, is winning National Championships again, putting Tennessee in it's place again and Tn fans still defend the guy who started the decline of their program, because he was too busy playing Inspector Clouseau instead of being a coach.

Coaches offering improper benefits, with legal testimony and documentation probably should have started an investigation, don't you think?
