Once they expand yes but they will still manipulate the rankings to keep an all sec national title game. In other words in 2011 I believe the rankings were correct but just drop. Bama to four so that LSU or Bama eliminates the other

Thanks, that's a much better way to phrase it

Wonder how Alvarez and Long will get along

I was wondering that as well

There will be 12-18 members, the 5 announced today were the AD represnatives from the big 5 conferences.
You gotta figure it will rotate annually as well, so I'd imagine these assignments are just for next year.

It's strictly 2014. I'm not sure if there will be permanent members. They probably don't know either, just trying to get next year off the ground.

But once this expands to 6 or 8 teams, it's clear the best team will be left standing
I think that's the best solution. Expand it to 8 teams and let the best team at year's end win.
SEC is the strongest conference and would benefit most from an 8 team playoff.
When Spurrier was at Florida eons ago, he was an early passionate supporter of a playoff for this reason. Figured with a tough schedule (SEC plus Miami and FSU when they were both still powerhouses) that a playoff was Florida's best shot at a title.
I hated Florida and Spurrier (58-3 - Curley Hallman!) with a passion in the 90s but I've come to appreciate the OBC's insights and wit the older I get.

I like it, he has proven his integrity when he let Petrino go, he didn't have to but it was the right thing to do. Hogs were on the climb as a program and have taken a huge hit since.
He did the right thing and earned my respect.
I 100% agree Long did the right thing with the Petrino situation.
Well, I don't know about bringing in John LOL Smith but he had to move fast, the timing was horrible and options were pretty limited. Spilled milk at this point.

I think it shows a lack of integrity if he is the AD that hired Petrino in the first place.

8 is too many and greatly dimisinshes the regular season though.
Right now losing a single game is pretty devastating, and losing two is just about a kiss of death.
I don't want to turn college football into college basketball, which as the worst and most meaingless regular season in all of sports.

Long will tell Barry how cheap he is and then vote in all SEC teams possible. Seems like the right thing to do.

Lulz.
I think Alabama and LSU have proved that to be untrue.

8 teams out of 120 isn't going to turn it into March Madness. Keep it to strictly the top 8 in the land. No automatic qualifiers for conference champs. Let's find out if a #4 ranked Boise State or Oregon could beat the best in the land.
If we want the regular season to be a true playoff then let's get rid out of all the boring arse rent a win games and kick a lot of lesser schools out of FBS. That's not going to happen so I'd rather see an eight team playoff where we find out who the best really is on the field.

A single loss is pretty devastating, it puts you at the mercy of scoreboard watching and you lose control of your own destiny.
Nobody wants to be in the position of needing Pitt to beat West Virginia or Iowa State to beat Oklahoma State.
Lose once and you're in some major trouble unless you get help.
That keeps every regular season game very tense and exciting.

Last night's Iowa State and Texas game had no bearing at all on the national title (other than strength of schedule calculations) but it was plenty damn tense and exciting.
Get rid of all the meaningless rent a win games and I'll agree with you.
The momentum is moving in the direction of an 8 team playoff. 4 is the gateway drug. It's only a matter of when, not if it will happen.

Speaking of integrity, how's Urban's "heart problem"?
That's a beacon of character right there.
