My grandmother who is hardcore baptist didn't like me reading Harry Potter when I was younger and when I told her I was thinking about attending Catholic mass and converting to catholicism, you would have thought I had shot somebody.
And I think I wouldn't have a problem with some of those hardcore assertions if the people who push them didn't live a double-standard themselves (not saying your grandmother does obviously). Practice what you preach so to speak.
It drives me crazy when I see how catty it gets between denominations too. My Catholic great-aunt told my Baptist grandmother that my grandfather (who was Catholic growing up and converted to Baptism when he married my grandmother) at his funeral that he was going to Hell because he didn't receive his last rites. Forget the fact that he would give you the shirt off of his back and was one of the most selfless people I've ever met.
Some of the best Christians I know don't advertise it or show out over it. They're not preachy and live a very "to each his own" kind of life. Unfortunately a lot of churches these days are full of the exact opposite.

I think you're missing my point though. My point is that the Religious Right and Christians in general shouldn't cherry pick some sins as worst than others and should focus on the sin nature that EVERYONE has (if you believe the Bible) and include themselves as "bad" or "sinful" when preaching or debating with someone. In other words something as seemingly trivial as gossiping or envying your friend for his house or job and wishing you had them is just as bad as adultery, homosexuality, etc, etc.
I agree. If you believe the purpose is to view all sin equally, and you admit you aren't free of sin, outlawing gay marriage is no different that outlawing gossiping or wishing you wanted a neighbor's car. But all sin isn't equal. Murder is worse than perpetuating a belief in Santa Claus.
quote:
If you object to me merely pointing out that the Bible very clearly points out the things I listed as sins then I don't know what to tell you.
You don't have to tell me anything. I don't believe in the Bible's view of sin any more than I do the Koran, the Book of Mormon, Dianetics or the Brothers Grimm. So your reaction to a Muslim talking about how it is a sin to draw a picture of the Prophet of Mohamed is my reaction to those things you believe are sins.
quote:
That doesn't mean that as one who believes himself to be Christian that I or other Christians should fight gay marriage or stand in the way or them getting married. There is a big difference.
Agreed.

I agree. I think it is sort of the nature of the beast, and Christianity will always perpetuate this problem because of its inherent contradictions and fallacies. Just my opinion though.

I think belonging to a big Baptist church in a small town, where my entire family lived, and parents were raised, and where everyone knew everyone, made it much harder. Of course, I was kind of a rebel & liked to shock and go against status quo, not giving too many fricks what other people thought, which drove my mother crazy, so I had a bit of fun with it.
I bet when a man finally unleashed your sexual side, you were a whole hell of a lot of fun.

One of my first boyfriends was from a devoutly Catholic family. My mom told me he would eventually break up with me because his parents wouldn't want him getting too close to someone who wasn't Catholic. I told her that was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard, but a few weeks later he did exactly that. And said his parents didn't want him serious about someone who was Baptist. And I told him that was dumbest thing I'd ever heard and that was that.

This is how I try to be. I do the best I can do. But I try to avoid telling others how they should livd live their lives. I'd rather be a quiet example, if I can.

And not saying we never had religious hypocrisy before, but the current state of Christianity seems to breed more of it. Especially with these non-denominational mega-churches that come off as "selling" your salvation.
It's all terribly off putting.

Yup. The mega-church is a pretty disgusting thing. I despise them and will never give them a dollar.

None of them are as easy as the Catholic broads. Had a Catholic FWB in high school whose legs would fly open like the doors of a saloon every Friday and Saturday night.

Church is the biggest BS ive ever been a part of. Group of 2 or 3 people get up on a podium and tell you their interpretation or the consensus' interpretation and you sit back and listen while they make you stand up and sing afterward.
I got my own interps and I give no shits about being with other people. The 7th day is Saturday btw. Not Sunday

This. But I have no interest in attending Church the rest of my life and going through a charade I hate. Women like this revel in it. I dated a gorgeous one for like two year. The sex has never been rivaled before or after, but that doesn't make up for the constant religious psycho-babble.

the megachurches have to make money to stay in business. literally.
they have to do what they have to do. I don't care for it, but apparently there are plenty of others feel the need to join in and conform. to please someone, I guess.
I try to live by "Helping hands are better than praying hands."

The biggest whores I've ever known wore a cross and/or went to church at least a couple times a month.
On the other hand, my wife and I have only ever slept with each other and she never went to church growing up. She believed in God but in no way was raised religious. BUT, she had a father who always respected her mother and a mother who talked to her early and often about boys, sex and responsibility.
IMO, church (more specifically, church families and their sheltering) turns kids into the kinds of things that very style of parenting is trying to prevent. I am a Christian but I plan on raising my kids with exposure to alcohol, talks of dating and sex and a realistic view of how society will work instead of the idealistic world many Christians wish we lived in.

Unless you are catholic, you won't be seeing someone present their "opinion" as fact. Additionally, plenty of non-denom churches don't so songs.
