LSU players, Miles on possibility of gay teammate coming out

“Football is supposed to be this violent sport — this aggressive sport that grown men are supposed to play,” said senior LSU running back Alfred Blue. “Ain’t no little boys out here between them lines. So if you gay, we look at you as a sissy. You know? Like, how you going to say you can do what we do and you want a man?”
The Reveille is framing the issue as an analogous to Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier:
quote:
Everything from desegregation, such as Jackie Robinson’s smashing of baseball’s color barrier, to centuries-old religious differences have found their way onto athletic fields throughout history. In one way or another, they have worked as proponents — or, in some instances, opponents — of change in society.
Blue's comments will be sure to get the most attention but most of the team seemed only concerned that players be able to do their job on the field.

When asked how they would feel about having an openly gay teammate, most athletes continued to preach teamwork and brotherhood.
LSU sophomore quarterback Stephen Rivers summed up the attitude in just one sentence.
“If he can play for LSU, he will play for LSU,” Rivers said.
quote:
Even if the number of openly gay athletes on the football team is zero at the moment — something Blue insisted was the case — the possibility still remains that a player may come out in the future and LSU coach Les Miles and his team will have to respond.
“I would handle it as what’s important and what’s best for the team,” Miles said. “I would treat him, and expect his teammates to treat him, in an appropriate and straightforward manner. ... It would have to be something that I took to an office and kind of describe how I saw locker rooms and how I saw travel and how I saw staying in hotel rooms and how I saw those things. If that’s not an issue, I think things could be resolved.”

Interdasting.
Personally, I agree with Rivers. If the dude can do his job, I don't GAF who he shares a bed with.
Lastly, can anyone translate what Miles actually said?

Yahoo Sports now has the story:

Earlier this week, UCLA released it’s “You Can Play Project” video encouraging homosexual athletes in collegiate sports to be comfortable coming out, and football coach Jim Mora was candid about his support for a gay player or coach joining his program.
However, not everyone in college football is as open-minded as Mora.
The Daily Reveille, LSU’s student newspaper, talked to several LSU football players and asked their thoughts about having a gay teammate. The responses, as one could imagine, were diverse.

Are you saying Alfred is on the down low?

Miles - If he has the "chest" and a serious WANT to win, and will contribute to a damn strong football team, he can play. On the other hand, he was pretty imperative that only girls should find the players after the game and give them a kiss

If we have a gay teammate he would need a separate locker room and hotel. That's how I read it anyway.

Sure, no problem...

OP is a sissy

True, I'm not man enough to play between the lines.
I didn't even weigh 100 pounds my first day of high school.
Story isn't about me though.
Wonder when Bama's student paper is going to put out a story like this interviewing their players and Saban?

I'm still trying to integrate " It would have to be something that I took to an office and kind of describe how I saw locker rooms " in context of a gay player...without getting banned.

Yeah, I'm sticking with "no comment."

Sort of.
Sounded more like a hedge along the lines of "Well, it would make the locker room and hotel situation a little weird and we'd need to chat about that as a team and work it out somehow."
It's a legit concern. I wonder how the military is handling that now.

Nice catch.
Or was it a pitch?
I'm so confused...

Alfred Blue- Presenting a very uneducated, but very common belief among athletes
Stephen Rivers- "If you can play, you can play". This attitude is becoming more and more common among athletes, especially the more educated ones
Les Miles- You can play for LSU, but you're going to be treated differently
I really like what Rivers said, personally. If we can accept people like Ray Lewis and glorify them, why is it so goddamn terrible to accept someone that's attracted to men?

What if it was a transexual? OMG MIND/LOCKERROOM BLOWN?

The real question is why is the press asking the LSU football team these questions?
My guess is that they were looking for a big bomb to be dropped and run with it. Alfred Blue took the bait a little bit, but Miles handles it like a pro by side stepping it all together.
The press is looking for a gay football story so bad it is killing them.

WPS20 would allow it. He loves a tranny.

I don't believe in transsexuals, personally. But if they are to play sports, they should play the level of the gender that they're pretending to be.
