Alabama Basketball: The Crowd at Coleman Coliseum

The way the season unfolded and ended sucked. Make no mistake there were highs too, buzzer beaters, an early trip to New York and being withing mathematical reach of an SEC title. But enough has been said about that. I wanna talk about the fans.
The game against Maryland BLEW ME AWAY. I was expecting a small crowd with the students away on break and many businesses closed. I was told our pep band was moved down to the student floor seats and several of our teams were given reserved seats so our crowd wouldn't look so pitiful. But lo and behold, people came.... and filled the whole place up. Not only that, but when Bama fought back, the place got loud... really loud.
Usually its the students that make the noise and the whole arena will stand up and clap if the games in doubt. But tonight, you could hear each and everyone of the 15,000 fans there tonight. It almost hurts that the best crowd I've seen in a long time had to be shown a loss. So, my hat is off to you Tuscaloosa, with any luck, Bama Basketball will provide a product worthy of you guys next year.
If the crowd can duplicate the levels of crazy we had then, next season. Then I can't wait.

That's what general admission does. I wish we could do seating like that every game.

Something has to be done. It's because of the general admission seating, the ticket holders that take up most of the lower section add almost nothing to the environment and some times don't even show up. I really hope this opened the eyes of the powers that be to make changes that provide fans that want to be there and make noise better seating and also redo student seating to provide students with a better experience.

the fans sitting closest to the floor, where lined up in the Coleman lobby three hours before tipoff.

The same blue hairs that keep the lower bowl in BDS quiet and calm.

This, I have always thought we never reach our full potential in BDS because some of our upity older fans think they are too good to make noise

I can't stand some of our fans in BDS or Coleman. They come solely to sit on their arse and coach from the bleachers. It fricking infuriates me. Especially the, "DOWN IN FRONT!" crowd when we're on defense.
Newsflash: People think LSU is the best/loudest stadium in the country because their fans know when and how to cheer (please, on everything holy, STOP CHEERING WHEN WE'RE IN THE OFFENSIVE HUDDLE OR TRYING TO MAKE LINE CALLS), not sit on their arse and be a grumpy frick.
Edit: and every man woman and child in that stadium should be yelling on every defensive possession in a close game. Blowouts? Don't care what you do.

General admission would fix a lot. Dedicate a block or two on the 50 to season ticket holders.... but make everything else first come first serve. If you wanna really good seats to go nuts, show up early... if you want to sit for 3 hours with your kids.... you can still come but you'll be in the upper deck most likely.... wishful thinking.

Lol... Come on man. General admission in football? Not only would we lose a frick ton of money, but the the entire lower bowl would be the lower student section x30. No thanks.
ETA: I just read this whole thread. 4 out the the 5 in here are < 27. While I agree that the bluehairs aren't good for our crowds, there's nothing we can do about it, because they have all the money and they support the university in more ways than being loud during a game. Can y'all afford the season ticket + the hefty donation? Maybe I view these people differently than y'all do, but they heavily contribute to our university.

I think winning is better than raising money.

LOL x1000 if you think the "powers that be" care about a better atmosphere or more fans sitting in the lower bowl more than they care about the money. They don't care if all the season-ticket holders show for every game, or if all the "blue-hairs" stand up and make a ton of noise. All they care about is those prime seats being sold for every game. Not like one NIT game would change anything even if they cared about anything nearly as strong as they do the money.

You don't win without raising money. I would absolutely love for BDS to be the loudest, most intimidating stadium in the country but I'm not going to complain if some old folks want to give a lot money to the university so they can go to games and sit on their hands. Also I usually either sit in the AD section surrounded by coaches of other sports or the A Club section surrounded by former players and neither are particularly loud or rowdy.

Another reason why BDS isn't as loud as Death Valley is the way that BDS is built. We are waaay to far from the field compared to DV. The LSU fans are right up on the field, practically behind the coaches. We are still a good ways away from the field.
Also apparently DV's field is underground too, which helps keep the sound in. I heard me might lower our field too but that's probably just a rumor. I really wish they would enclosed the upper deck and make it a giant bowl like at Tennessee. That would help keep the noise in too.

Death Valley is so loud because it pretty much shoots straight up on all sides keeping the sound in. The fact that the fans are a few feet closer to the field has nothing to do with it.

I was there, it was a pretty awesome crowd for an NIT game

I get the need for the money from season ticket holders, but I wish they would do one of 2 things at basketball games. Either move the students closer, or make one section in the lower level general admission. I know it won't happen, but it would be fun.

I really think moving the students to the side of the court would do a lot. The endzone is great placement in football but that location in basketball is awful. Students don't get excited enough for basketball and going to games just to sit way up behind the backboard isn't a great fan experience.
