quote:It certainly hurt, but not surprising considering we fired the guys that they committed to. However, keeping Lawson (who was a bigger recruit than those two) and getting Adams as a replacement for Dee was impressive. Not to mention adding Daniel.
they lost the two biggest recruits they had in Foster and Liner.
I'm not saying our class was better than everyone else's, just that the circumstances Malzahn had to overcome to sign a great class is impressive.

Gotta give the edge to Freeze.
Gustav and staff did a remarkable job this year, but AU has had plenty of top 15 classes in recent years, no matter who was doing the recruiting.
The blACK BeARs have been ranked in the 30s or lower more often than in the top 20. To pull a top 10 class the year after ranking #40 is nothing short of astonishing.

Malzahn also flipped two of Freeze's commitments -- Barber and Daniel. Head-to-head, GM seemed to get the better of the deal... time will tell who the better class is, though.

Freeze, but I am very happy with what Auburn did...
Missed on only one that I expected us to get..(MacKenzie)

I honestly believe that A&M is going to have to start playing the "game" and just stop worrying about the NCAA. We are recruiting much better, but not to the level these teams are.
NCAA is spineless anyway. Cam was definitely bought, Oregon is shelling out the bucks, and Miami is probably going to get off on a technicality. I'm sure OM will get off as well when the impending investigation occurs.
As for the question, Freeze and his boosters did better than Malzahn and his boosters.

I would say Butch Jones or Mark Richt personally.

Freeze and it's not even close.
Circumstances to overcome:
Malzahn
0-8 SEC season
entire staff fired
8 weeks to get new staff
8 weeks to find a way to get recruits
In state rival has Saban, back to back, and 3 of 4
Out of state rival has SEC East Championship and vastly superior in state talent
alleged racist center
Freeze
He coaches Ole Miss
I mean, I can agree that Freeze had the bigger obstacle, but it is close, right?

I think these two's high school coaching experience helps them. They are more familiar with what makes a high school player tick than oracles who didn't coach at that level.

I agree with this. Now they gotta develop the talent.

I judge classes by what happens over the next year.
Let's face it, some players don't ever make it to campus. Some do and last a year. Some just seem to disappear.
On just the LOIs, It would be Freeze.
On the over all best job it's Gus.
Shorter time fram, and no luxury of having the top recruit in the nation's brother enrolled.
Hat's off to both.

Malzhan hired one of the best recruiting staffs in the country ... doesn't really surprise me one bit.

I guess Freeze because Ole Miss is a tougher sell. It sounds like kids love playing for him, so he may be doing this for awhile.
I don't fault Malzahn for losing Liner and Foster. I'm more impressed by who he kept. And think of it this way: If Liner had stayed solid, Auburn probably wouldn't have gotten to Adams and Daniel. Not sure Auburn lost out there.
In a couple of hours we'll know if Auburn replaced Foster with Cunningham. Cunningham's nowhere near the force Foster is, and he's a very different player, but it does look like Auburn found solid ways to help at LB despite losing Foster.
