1. Chris Petersen (hey, if Arkansas can talk to him, so can we)
2. Gary Patterson
3. Bobby Petrino
4. Kirby Smart/Jimbo Fisher

My 4 and 5 are interchangeable. I'm starting to come around on Smart a little more. Is he a gamble? Absolutely. Is Saban more responsible for Bama's D than Smart? No question. But there can't be anybody out there that knows Saban's schemes and Saban's tendencies with knowledge of what it takes to have a top-of-the-line defense every year more than Smart. I don't want an assistant or an uproven coach, but if we're going to go that route, Smart is worth the gamble.
Jimbo has had good success at FSU and will bring a good defense to AU, but I'm not crazy about him. He coaches in a very weak conference, and he has yet to prove he can even dominate it (losses to NC State, Wake Forest, etc.). And he just got curb-stomped by a top-tier SEC team, which is what he's going to deal with on a weekly basis if he comes here. Not saying Jimbo isn't a good coach, but I think the ACC has made him look better than he really is. But he can recruit.
If we hire anybody but one of these five guys (barring a miraculous Jeff Fisher, Jon Gruden, Jim Harbaugh-type hire), I don't really care. We shouldn't have to settle for a Malzahn, Strong, Dykes type of coach. If we do, we will continue to get run roughshod over.

If we could get Franklin, I would rank him towards the top of my list. People can say what they want, but we need someone who can come in, be a tough arse, and motivate the players. Especially if the crap about players treating workouts as optional and the team being "soft" is true. He's proven he can do that. He's also proven he can recruit. AU doesn't have the academic Vandy standards either.

Somebody please help me understand the love for Charlie Strong. What has the guy done other than be decent in a God-awful conference? Yeah, he can recruit, but with the way he's recruited (ala Chizik) he should be absolutely dominating the Big East. Instead, he's losing to UConn and Syracuse.
Petrino took Louisville to BCS bowls when the Big East was much better.
I just don't understand the support for Strong. Would be a terrible hire, IMO.

I agree with both your posts except I'm not as sold on the Kirby experiment as you.
Your list is solid and I completely agree with the Charlie Strong analysis.
