SC's #2 AD person headed to A&M

Marcy Girton, who was the #2 person in South Carolina's AD behind Eric Hyman, is headed to Texas A&M.

I just hope their first order of duty is to do whatever it takes, even if it exceeds their authority and purview, to throw out Jason Cook along with anyone and everyone in charge of marketing and PR. I've never seen an institution of our size and stature represented by such an amatuer-hour, bush-league pack of incompetents as the nincompoops we have in charge of promoting our brand.

I'm guessing Penny because she has been around since the early 70's. Retirement maybe?

Anyone whose been in our AD since the 70s (or hell, even 80s, 90s or 2000s) needs to go, especially if they've been directly involved with the football program.

Sounds like the problem we had with our AD and administration. Everyone was caught of guard when we got Bjork instead of someone close to the university. Our administration finally made a smart decision.

I actually feel bad for Mr. Cook. I think he does a good job considering what he has to work with.
Aggies are pretty hard to market. Heck our "you can't understand it from the outside...." motto might as well be "frick Marketing Ourselves."
I could see the job being very demoralizing. As an outside marketing guy the first week you would push to make a few tweaks (FEMALE CHEERLEADERS) to make the brand more palatable and universal and those in charge would shoot down all your ideas. One would quickly grow frustrated and give up when faced with such obstacles to marketing success, as those before him have done. We want to be weird and different, but that is a marketer's nightmare.
Given those restrictions Mr. Cook has done well. He knew our brand was ruined in the Big 12, so he pushed for the SEC to get a new marketing angle. When the SEC thing happened he has worked as hard as possible to assimilate the more palatable SEC brand into the greater Aggie brand. Maybe in a few years instead of being the "gay cultists" to outsiders we will be "just another big SEC school" which will sell three times as many T-shirts.
Is he perfect? Hell no. Obviously the recent video while he was away was a mistake (though it got pulled off Youtube as soon as he was back in CS), and I think he relies too much on inside talent to make things like billboards and advertisements. Time to just admit Aggies as a whole are not that creative and bid the jobs out to Mizzou grads or someone who has shown to be more competent in such matters.
But given the huge number of restrictions he has to work with I think he does a good job, and might actually improve our brand in his tenure despite ourselves.

So, is it imaginable that the Old Ball Coach wants the AD job after coaching this yr? Is that even a realistic consideration on the part of the Cocks?

Marketing ourselves is a hell of a lot easier when you're winning as well, which is another luxury he hasn't been afforded. I know, Olympic championships and shite, but when people think of A&M athletic programs they think of football first and foremost, whether it be in a positive or negative light, and lately it hasn't been very positive as far as results go.

Agree 100%. If you are like an OU/Bama and your primary brand is "Success Football Program" then it is much easier to have a palatable brand.
Another problem we face is unlike most other SEC programs we are not the primary program in our own state. Most other big programs can lean on state pride to re-enforce the brand, be we can't do that.
When you look at the scene nationally you find our problem is not unique. Many other programs that share a state with a more popular program have trouble with branding and staying competitive in the marketplace:
UCLA has basically given up athletics and focuses on academics. FSU needed a hall-of-fame coach combined with a historically weak primary competitor to have the success it has had. Mich. St. is a huge failure when it comes to marketing and success, as is NC State.
In fact the only program I can find that has done well in our condition is Auburn. They have found a way to have a solid brand and success despite sharing the state with the most successful program in college football history. Hats off to the War Eagles.

You can't compare marketing a college football team's brand with marketing laundry detergent. What makes college football great is the fact that every school with any tradition has things which are unique to that school and look weird and different to opposing fans. But that unique "weirdness" is what makes the schools athletic program attractive on a national level to opposing fans and their programs. It is what defines college football and what makes it great. The Aggie's so-called "weirdness of traditions" are what make them a potentially great national brand and is also what made it an attractive program for the SEC to pursue. I think the Arkansas tradition of "calling the hogs" is ridiculous, but it is sacred to them and ironically the uniqueness of it is what makes Arkansas a potentially great national brand amongst other things despite the grief I and other opposing fans give them on this board.

Cook is great. The whole SEC deal should prove that especially with the hiring of Hyman. I think some people might just be overreacting to the video that recently came out with the college kids.

Wow. This is the best post I have read on a college board. I don't want to change Aggie traditions, although I am pro cheerleaders added to the mix.
The video is totally different and Cook should be held accountable for it. Instead he shifted the blame on Aggie fans which has created the hate.

i have to admit, your marketing guys are pretty bad. maybe not as bad as you portray (but i understand your feelings). the thing is, you guys are on the cusp of stepping up on the national stage with your entry into the sec and you probably should go to new york and get some national level marketers. sure, you want to portray your "personality" as you see it; maybe down home, white hat, good guys with strong family values but a cracker jack with an outside, objective viewpoint might be able to project that in a such a way that it also enhances your image in a more professional manner. you guys have a lot to sell and the sec is largely unfamiliar with you. all of that will change. good luck. i have no doubt that you are a good fit and all of the marketing thing will work itself out. personally, i thought the recent video you guys hate was not that bad. the students that performed it are just kids and in a grandfatherly type way i thought they were kinda cute (cool, whatever).
