Why Were Bama & LSU So Much Better Last Year?

I don't know that I've ever seen 2 teams so completely dominate the SEC the way Bama and LSU did. And, LSU had bad QB play. Was everyone else just down? Was it a convergence of events? How did these 2 teams blow out the competition week in and week out in the toughest conference in the land?
With great OLine/DLine play, size, strength, speed, and a powerful running game, is this the new formula? Is this how you win in college football? Has the Spread Offense run it's course and we are back to fundamentals?
Just wondering if Bama/LSU's dominance last year has other teams altering their approach?

Defense wins championships! And when you run the ball you control the clock... Thus keeping your defense fresh! Little Nicky and lesticles understand this

Re-post from BOL
Sportsman’s club dinner in Austin, TX (August 2011)No great speakers or stories of note like last year (see below) but one overarching theme that would have annoyed me if I were a Longhorn, but amused me as a Bama fan. The whole evening seemed like an infomercial for the SEC. There were three assistant coaches on hand: Applewhite, Harsin, and Diaz. As Mack introduced Applewhite he reminded us of his prior tour at Bama and as he introduced Diaz he mentioned his background at State. When he spoke about the new additions not in attendance he talked about Searels coming from Georgia (and LSU at one point I think) and Bo Davis coming from Bama and LSU under Saban. He talked about Bennie Wylie who he had just hired from the little orange as well. After all this he raised an eyebrow to the crowd and asked if anyone was spotting a theme. He then spent some time discussing how they were building an SEC style team in Austin centered on toughness and the line of scrimmage. Basically when the assistant coaches spoke they reiterated this, especially Diaz, who spent a lot of time on what it takes to play defense in the SEC. I found the whole theme a bit strange and if I were a Longhorn fan I think I would have been a bit insulted… alas thank goodness I am not, and of course they didn’t say anything that isn’t true.

There are 3 major phases of each team and more times than not, one is overlooked by even the best of coaches. Miles and Saban, both, emphasize Special teams.
I constantly read other team's fans talk smack about Les Miles. But, LSU's special teams, are usually at the top year in and year out. Miles actually goes out and puts a premium on recruiting punters, kickers, and deep snappers. Miles and Saban, both, usually play a lot of their best players on special teams too.
Recruiting, Defense and Special teams. This is where LSU and Bama separate themselves from some of the other teams.

This had a lot to do with the dominance. Florida, Tennessee and Auburn all had down seasons. Last year's UGA team wouldn't have sniffed ten wins in a regular year for the SEC and I personally think Arkansas and South Carolina both had much better teams in 2010 than they had in 2011 even though they finished higher in the rankings in 2011. Also Ole Miss and Kentucky were two of the worst SEC football teams not named Vandy that I've seen in recent years.

A combination of great talent evaluation and roster managment (processing) gave both teams the depth and skill that allowed them to play ball control O exposing the lack of depth of the also rans like Arkansas who were not deep enough to hang all 4 quarters.

This can be left up to interpretation.

This also happened just a couple years ago when Florida and Bama were far and away the best two teams in the country
The SEC has a handful of powerhouse programs and when things break right at one of those (usually with good coaching, team chemistry, and recruiting all coming together) it can work out that two of the best teams in the country were from the same conference

Because Arkansas sucked arse on the road. If we played both of yall @ Ark last year we would have won.

Fans get caught up into schemes way too much. The bottom line is that the fundamentals win and the schemes are just a means to winning. If you can outblock and outtackle the opponent your team will win a lot regardless of what the scheme is. It doesn't hurt that Alabama has more talent either.
