Before A&M and Mizzou joined the SEC, I heard this argument from both Texas and A&M fans. Always made me laugh.
If we're talking academics, bring up that argument. If we're talking football, who cares? I don't bring up football when you tell me your kid's SAT score. And people who are really serious about academics are not weighing Yale vs Texas or Harvard vs A&M anyway. Are they both excellent academic universities? Yes. Better than most SEC schools? Yes. Is that the conversation we're having Septemeber - January? No.

FWIW when I graduated high school, TX offered me more $$ than AR did (academic scholarships) and I still went to AR. I'm not sure why everyone acts like it's impossible to get accepted to major public universities (A&M, TX, Mizzou) and everyone at A&M or Mizzou is intellectually superior to the rest of us. Is it because A&M and Mizzou are AAU schools? I had never heard of AAU until A&M and Mizzou started touting it because everybody knows Vandy is a great academic school, and Florida didn't have to resort to any argument off the field.
This academic debate of SEC vs Big 12 feels a lot like a football argument between Princeton and Yale might. It's just not the focus for most of the kids there, to be honest. And it's definitely not the focus of the SECr.

I'm proud of my degree and the great academic reputation A&M is developing but I don't see the relevance of it on here. And I think people can get a good education at pretty much any major public university and various different private schools too, it's what you make of it.

we are all pretty excited yet I don't think it will hit me until Florida comes to town or we travel for our first SEC road trip.. for now though...

Like our President said before the move.....Rice, who is ranked higher than all of us in terms of academics, is in CUSA...actually,they are in conference TBD.

The average tu fan just likes to degrade A&M as a little brother, and little brother did something to trump them, and they don't like it. It is as simple as that. The academics argument is just unfamiliarity. Honestly, the average Big XII fan probably couldn't tell you all the teams in the SEC. It just isn't a part of the discussion for folks, and unfamiliarity breeds ignorance.

Why the backlash then? I'm not saying people care or they don't, but it seems like lots of media (at least in Houston) and some coaches of Big 12 teams have been quick to criticize it. If they didn't care you'd think they wouldn't talk about it at all.

Recruiting has been great and our fans are definitely excited (as we have been for a while) but the media is still criticizing it and discussing the different ways it will go wrong.

well that would be a laugher, because Texas has one of the 10 worst graduation rates in the FBS.

Numbers like that are why I think mixing academics and athletics in these discussions is pretty dumb.
Texas and Georgia Tech are both very good schools, 2 of the best public schools in the country, yet they have very low grad rates. There's some other solid schools on there as well. Nobody really gives much of a shite about athletes getting an education.

Patently false. If no one cared, DeLoss Dodds wouldn't have made such a stink about ending the rivalry and refusing to play A&M in any sport (and strong-arming the remaining Big12 members into following suit). If no one cared, Baylor wouldn't have had a legal hissy fit with A&M trying to leave. If no one cared, there'd be little to no media backlash (think if baylor or kansas was making the jump to the SEC--hardly any reaction at all).
The bottom line is, many texas fans scoffed at the mere notion of A&M not being joined at the hip with texas. Then would claim the SEC would never take A&M without texas. Then would claim the SEC never had a standalone offer to A&M in the first place. Then got rejected by the Pac12. And finally were more than a little surprised when A&M actually followed through on its threat to leave (unlike the summer of 2010).
Maybe we didn't "trump" texas, but A&M certainly pulled off moves that the horns didn't expect--moves that at least have the potential for A&M to challenge for top dog in the state should we have a consistent measure of success in the country's best football conference.

I have a lot of Sooner family, in fact all of them are Sooners. Not just your typical Sooners, but my uncle won two National Titles, and was a three time All-American under Switzer. I have received endless amounts of shite talking and complaints about the move from them. All of them. Aunts, uncles, cousins, 30 or so, all have their own little spin on how we are scared and ran away, or how we are jealous of tu, or jealous of OU, how we will never win, blah blah blah. Phone calls, emails, texts. You name it. The Okie Lite wing? They were even worse.
I have many friends from tu, and they are all very obnoxious about it. Everything tu has ever been able to do, they could always say they can offer what A&M does, if not equal, then more. Well no longer with conference play. A&M is now playing in the undisputed and most exciting arena in college football. A&M has something more to offer than tu conference-wise, and it is an undisputed fact. I view that as a trump. Does tu still have a lot to offer? Of course, but this is something they can't control, and I feel like the average tu fan is afraid to admit it.

LSU is the only show in the state and LA has great athletes...
Alabama is a good example of a state with 2 great football programs, but they share a conference. One doesn't hold that advantage over the other.

You + are = you're. I'm generally not a Grammar Nazi, but can't help myself in this thread. I guess I did learn something after all at that embarrassing non-AAU university in Fayetteville.
My point was in response to previous posts discussing state populations as they relate to major football programs within each state.
It seems Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia and especially Alabama (with 2 major programs) are doing more with less.
Especially when you consider that most Texans think "Texas football" is greater than anybody else's version, these numbers just don't add up. By that logic and those numbers, the top 4 teams in the country should always be UT, A&M, Tech and TCU.
My point is that the SEC schools are doing more with less because they have better coaches and better weekly competition, which makes for better players. A&M will benefit from both of these, and will be the undisputed football school in the state within the next few years.
