re: Aggies - Serious question

Did you go to midnight yell? Was it that different from a pep rally at the Greek Theatre in Fayetteville? I didn't go, but it sounds a lot like what we have at AR. Loved it as a student at AR, would hate it as an opposing fan and maybe even as an alum. Same type of thing?
Oh no...

From what I've heard, she didn't have a scratch
What is it with the Freebirds references I keep seeing about College Station? You guys know that's a chain, right?

Hopefully a long time. The whole state loves him, and he gets paid well. Can't imagine any other team / state could give him the love AR does since we're so grateful Hootie is gone and Petrino gets all the accolades

He comes to A&M games all the time

What a surprise
Something Hootie would have actually been good for
FWIW I've never heard this outside the SECr, even in AR. I thought it was like "Germans". Could be wrong, but I thought an AR fan posted something about being the flagship univ a while ago, and everyone just jumped on it.

Lurked for over a year. Finally saw a SunHog post I couldn't ignore. :banghead:

Don't remember what it was now, and didn't get acct set up in time to reply to it anyway

You + are = you're. I'm generally not a Grammar Nazi, but can't help myself in this thread. I guess I did learn something after all at that embarrassing non-AAU university in Fayetteville.

My point was in response to previous posts discussing state populations as they relate to major football programs within each state.

It seems Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia and especially Alabama (with 2 major programs) are doing more with less.

Especially when you consider that most Texans think "Texas football" is greater than anybody else's version, these numbers just don't add up. By that logic and those numbers, the top 4 teams in the country should always be UT, A&M, Tech and TCU.

My point is that the SEC schools are doing more with less because they have better coaches and better weekly competition, which makes for better players. A&M will benefit from both of these, and will be the undisputed football school in the state within the next few years.

Georgia: 9,815,210
Tennessee: 6,403,353
South Carolina: 4,679,230
Kentucky: 4,369,356

Arkansas: 2,937,979
Alabama: 4,802,740
Louisiana: 4,574,836
Mississippi: 2,978,512
Texas: 25,674,681

Looks like Bama and LSU are doing okay...

You're a solid poster, and do a great job of representing your fan base.

Seems like A&M and AR have the same problem when it comes to embarrassing fans representing our alma maters. :banghead:

FWIW when I graduated high school, TX offered me more $$ than AR did (academic scholarships) and I still went to AR. I'm not sure why everyone acts like it's impossible to get accepted to major public universities (A&M, TX, Mizzou) and everyone at A&M or Mizzou is intellectually superior to the rest of us. Is it because A&M and Mizzou are AAU schools? I had never heard of AAU until A&M and Mizzou started touting it because everybody knows Vandy is a great academic school, and Florida didn't have to resort to any argument off the field.

This academic debate of SEC vs Big 12 feels a lot like a football argument between Princeton and Yale might. It's just not the focus for most of the kids there, to be honest. And it's definitely not the focus of the SECr.

Do Big 12 and Texas fans in particular STILL try to sell the ridiculous notion that A&M is selling out academics and going to a sh##### academic conference?

Before A&M and Mizzou joined the SEC, I heard this argument from both Texas and A&M fans. Always made me laugh.

If we're talking academics, bring up that argument. If we're talking football, who cares? I don't bring up football when you tell me your kid's SAT score. And people who are really serious about academics are not weighing Yale vs Texas or Harvard vs A&M anyway. Are they both excellent academic universities? Yes. Better than most SEC schools? Yes. Is that the conversation we're having Septemeber - January? No.

Good point.

And to be fair, it does seem like Texas only has one line about A&M, while A&M has the whole song about Texas.

Will y'all still sing this in the SEC?

Texas and Oklahoma don't give a shite about TAMU

Gotta come to my A&M buddies' defense here. While it may be true, who cares?

When was the last time an SEC team cared about Texas or Oklahoma?

They're consistently ranked at the top of preseason polls, then lose to terrible teams, but somehow make it to a bowl, where they lose to a real team.

Who cares what TX and OU think???

But seriously, A&M... maybe you should change your song?

Not arguing that. Arguing that one state doesn't matter if "top dog in the state" can't ever beat other states in the SEC

quote:

Do you really think A&M joining the SEC would just suddenly shift the discussion to a program that has been irrelevant for more than a decade

Yes, for two reasons. 1. A&M may not have won an NC lately, but I think "irrelevant" is a bit of a stretch. 2. No team in the SEC is irrelevant.

Bama, LSU, Arky, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee fans don't watch any TX team regularly. Folks in TX are watching those schools play every Saturday, though. Why is that?

Because TX football is only relevant in TX. No school in the state has been "relevant" in recent years. A&M now will be, even if they have a few rough years at first, because everybody in the country watches SEC football.

You must live in Texas if you think UT is relevant and A&M isn't.

Everybody in TX acts like TCU is relevant, for God's sake

Good point. Must admit, it's much easier to be an AR / SEC fan in TX now than it was 2 or 3 years ago when EVERYBODY rolled their eyes as soon as "SEC" came out of my mouth. Now it's only TCU fans that do that. :workingtokeepstraightface:

I think the A&M / Mizzou change has helped the SEC brand in TX more than most people realize. It certainly opened up the discussion, at least, whereas before nobody in TX would even hear it. They just all assumed TX was better at football, period. "SEC cheats, SEC schools are academically embarrassing, SEC players are all paid" etc.

Don't hear that as much anymore.

I like how these Big 12 loyalists hate on the SEC and say Okie Lite deserved to be in the NC one minute, and claim that the Big 12 was better top to bottom than the SEC last season... and then they turn around and say that the SEC is SUCH a step up from Big 12 competition that A&M will struggle to win 1-2 conference games in most seasons.

THIS.

Although I will say that a few years ago I heard this same argument from my Aggie friends, and now suddenly everyone agrees the SEC is the best conference.

UT is talking out of both sides of their mouths.

Or (correct me, LSU fans) talking out the side of their neck... Did I do it right?

Ok, I'm not going to argue a point like this or say who gives who a bad name. What I was trying to say was that most SEC schools have a huge percentage of the student body involved in Greek life. Your own A&M poster has said Greeks, frats, whatever you want to call them, were "ostracized". That's not the case at most SEC schools. At most (if not all) SEC schools, the corps would be the ones ostracized.

Maybe it's because we don't have other major organizations that would haze (corps, band, etc) so sororities / fraternities are the main "groups" on campus.

Lighten up, Aggie. Being a little brother for so long has made you defensive when you're not being attacked. No need to name call.
