Dareus had not met Sapp prior to the combine and smiled when told of the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer's high opinion of Dareus.

Sapp said before the combine Fairley might have more upside, but that Dareus was the safer pick.

Generally, reports indicated Dareus helped himself with his workout and could leapfrog Fairley in the draft. Dareus said Alabama prepared him to play in various defensive schemes and at various positions.

"I'm good at what I do," Dareus said. "My coaches prepared us well."

quote:

"Well, mainly (I wanted to) just come out here at the combine and show them with the drills that I am a great athlete and then with the interviews that we have that I am a great person off the field, too," Fairley said. "I want to show them the one-hit wonder is not in me."

Dareus, at 6-3, 319 pounds, also ran well, earning a time of 4.92 and, despite being almost 30 pounds heavier, outraced Fairley at the 10-yard split interval.

The former Auburn and Alabama defensive tackles, respectively, are being considered as high first-round NFL draft picks. It had widely been reported that Fairley was the favorite to be the NFL draft's No. 1 pick.

Some of those opinions began to shift in favor Dareus after the duo showed off their physical attributes in testing at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Just heard Chris Mortensen on SVP and he insinuated that Fairley was being a bit of a diva in insisting on riding in a certain type car and other little things. Mort didn't make a big deal about it but said little things like that annoy teams. He said Dareus had a very good combine and help himself tremendously.

He did say that both would definitely be very high drafts picks but it appears that Dareus may actually end up going slightly ahead of Fairley.

JMO I think Dareus will be a Marcus Spears type player in the NFL... a solid player who will stick in the pros but never play at a pro bowl level (mostly because of work ethic)

I think Fairley could be bigger boom or bust... in spite of being smaller I think he's more explosive and if he keeps his head right could be a Randle type player

Fairley is the kind of guy that goes after one of his teammates knees in practice.

Wait for it, it's gonna happen.

But Spears wasn't a top five pick. If Dareus was just a "solid" player for several years, people would see him as a bust, considering he'll be a top five pick.

I'll take Dareus and his 1.66 10 yard split at 320 pounds.

Safer pick, better explosion...

the bust label is also a function of how well the team performs... if you are a top pick and your team isn't great then you need to be awesome to avoid criticism

If your team is solid or great then you won't be labeled a bust if you are fairly productive. Exhibit A: Russell Maryland (top pick for teh Cowboys in 1991)

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay on Fairley and Dareus.

Fairley
quote:

''He can get after the quarterback,'' ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay said Monday while broadcasting from Lucas Oil Stadium. ''He gets off the ball quickly, and we know about his athleticism. But with Fairley, you've also got a player that takes some plays off. He's known to be a cheap-shot artist, taking a lot of hits after the play was over, the whistle had blown.

''And at 6-3, 291 pounds, you're evaluating a different player than if he was at his listed size of 6-5, 300 pounds. It's a big difference. I think he can get back up to that 297, 300-pound range, but at 6-3, he's just not as big and doesn't have the wingspan that people expected.''

Dareus
quote:

''I think Marcell Dareus, with the workout he had . . . is gonna move ahead of Fairley and wind up being the first defensive tackle to come off the board,'' McShay said.
