Auburn University has estimated the cost to repair any damages and control the spread of the herbicide at $2,500, according to the affidavit.
Anyone that thinks this will only cost $2500 when it is all said and done is crazy. The are digging trenches to put liquid charcoal in the ground to try and soak up the poison. Once the trees die, all the soil will have to be removed along with the trees and the entire area will have to be remediated. The will include removing the brick walls in that area, the curb, the sidewalk, and possibly part of the street. An HDPE separation will have to be put down, then all of the soil replaced. Full size oaks will probably be put down and they are not cheap. Then all of the infrastructure will be put back. $2500??? No way.
ETA: I do not think Bama fans should pay for this. Harvey should. Thanks for the classy gesture and funds donated so far.

If the War Plainsmaen want some cheap, permanent security for the trees, just have them hire those dumbasses that sat in the trees out at Berkeley. They don't mind sitting in trees for extended periods of time and already have their own hammocks.

I hate that the trees were poisoned, and yeah it sucks for tradition, but AU fans need some perspective when it comes to a couple trees. Seeing fans leaving messages and holding vigils at the trees like they are sickened cancer victims is pretty disturbing. You can't kill tradition, regardless of whether a couple trees live or die
AU has plenty of money and resources to pay for the tree costs. I would suggest donating the 32k plus raised to a charity that can actually benefit people. Hell even do it in the name of the Toomer's Trees if you like.

Am I the only one who thinks that the money raised from this should just go to a charity and let this Harvey frick pay for this? The gesture is nice and all but the Bama fans shouldn't flip the bill on it.

I agree, Bama fans aren't responsible for what happened. Donate the cash to a charity that can do some good. BTW 32k is pretty impressive.

I sent an email to the tide for toomers people saying they should donate it to the iron bowl food drive, something where both schools come together because the state is likely to pay for this as well as corporate donations and they said that was stupid. And the money was needed for trees only. People need to get priorities in order.

That's pathetic to those overreacting to this situaton, Bammers and Aubies both, for shame

Sorry but you are pretty off base. If something is done intentionally, it is a very tragic =scenario. I don't care if its burning the "play like a champion" sign that Notre Dame has, destroying howards rock or any other HISTORIC pieces of a schools tradition. It is plain wrong, the idiots who say "they are just tree's" have no respect for history unless its their own.
Traditions are what make college ball so much better than professional football. Which is why every college fan should be pissed. Those Bama fans that donated are showing their sorrow at the loss of a historic tradition. They are the fans that make college football great, not the assholes who do their most to tear down the other schools and rivals. Non of you have any right to look down on someone for leaving a momento or sign by something that meant so much to them. If nothing else it is a way to heal through feelings of loss. Those that donated feel horrible that one of their own did something to destroy something so great.
I still say the fanbase shouldnt pay for this, there should be civil action against Updyke to suck him dry of every penny until things are paid for. I respect the good fans out there of any team, unfortunately there are few on this site.

Trees can be replaced. An Uga dies, we memorialize and replace him. The Chapel bell was broken from being rung too much, we replaced it. The Hedges were destroyed when our own fans (stupidly) rushed the field in 2000, and we replaced them. Historic pieces of a schools tradition become historic traditions because of the acts that they endure, not the 130 years that they've been alive

You're seriously feeling this is equal to terminally ill people?
I understand being upset and the emotional aspect of it, but equating it to a tragedy and equal to that of suffering people and families in sickness and death is a bit much.

It isn't hard to understand man. The hedges are not something that haven't been replaced over and over. They even hold some off campus since they have to replace them so much. The bell was rang too much by UGA winning (this is probably the biggest comparison to the tree's slowly dying on their own from the concrete, fumes and washing's) But once again, that wasn't intentional destruction.
These aren't shrubs that you can plant and have just the same like the hedges. If fans poisoned all of the hedges, I would be pissed and disgusted. I love UGA for those traditions, just as I do all other schools with them. These these take decades to mature and grow. There will be years of this tradition being put on hold and possibly dying out because of this. This doesn't kill the Auburn spirit, I am not saying that. It is sickening and everyone should have the right to show their feelings and not have spiteful comments by fans who don't understand the great part of college ball.

I lost my mom to breast cancer a couple years ago. I would rather you not even go there about comparing it to that.
There is nothing wrong with someone with grief expressing it. Would you rather them take it out in rage against Tuscaloosa?
And yes it is tragic. Same degree as a person being murdered? No. But tragic for the low of this rivalry and the intensional destruction of a history rich tradition? Yes.

Sorry for your loss, and I'm not comparing it to that. But alot of the sentiments being displayed by some of the fans are giving it that comparison. Showing grief is fine, not showing anger is better. Taking it to the extremes is what we're talking about.

if people poisoned our hedges it would first take them forever and second i doubt we'd react any way other than the other fans are idiots

Why complain at all? Why care? If it stops the hatred and wishing for revenge, then let it go. You get nothing out of demeaning the people that feel a need to express themselves. I for one am hoping this can calm things so that there are no retaliations against your school.

The comments aren't spiteful though. They're just realistic. I have no problem with people showing sympathy for what happened or Auburn fans for being upset over it. It was a dick move on the part of a rogue Bama fan, I think we can all agree on that and embrace some sort of due justice for his actions. However raising $32,000 for a couple of trees? That money isn't going to make them grow any faster. Donate it to something a lot more worthwhile and let this incident become a part of the Toomer's tradition. If it means as much to the Auburn faithful as it obviously does, the tradition can hold out long enough for some new trees to fully mature (I highly doubt they'd just install a couple of saplings when they finally deem the soil clear enough to plant in again)
