Kind of arguing over different things here guys. Ugas memorial is inside the stadium, right? If he were dying there might be a vigil, like of hit by a car or something.

The treez are still there. People are trying to live it up while the current trees are still there.

There's a difference between an online guest book and a public prayer vigil. Like I said, when an Uga dies we're all saddened but we don't gather around his dog house and light candles

I didn't want to say it, but putting to UGA to rest is a bi-annual event. There is/was no prayer vigil. There was a rally by the tree's. No need to over dramatize it to try to prove your point.

Also, signing onto a memorial online guestbook is pretty much the same as leaving notes by the tree's.

I'm starting to wonder if we are upset at the loss of these trees or the fact that we can no longer roll them after victories

I'm more against this raising money by Bama fans than anything Auburn is doing, but in light of this past season and everything that is happening now, AU is just coming off as being a little too sensitive

I think your missing the point that the trees are really more of a symbol than anything else. They're a symbol of a feeling of home and a feeling of family, if you will, for Auburn fans. My grandfather and mother walked under those trees. My grandfather died before I was born, but when I went to games as a child with my parents, my mom would always tell me about how he would walk around with her after games and go to Toomers corner and roll the trees, etc. I have very fond memories as a child of that experience. If they end up dying, a part of that dies and is gone. I'm sure my grandfather died knowing nothing would ever happen to those trees along the lines of what happened. Yes, they can eventually be replaced, but it's just not going to be the same.

With all due respect to uga, he's a mascot. He's not a gathering place of celebration that has bonded fans for years.

I think people have to understand the fact that it's not just trees. The trees are the embodiment of years of history and experiences that have a deep seeded place in many, many Auburn fans hearts. I think the bama fans, for the most part, that are donating money realize this and probably have something in their lives that represents something similar. They understand the loss that Auburn fans all of a sudden feel. They've looked past a rivalry and they've shown their own compassion. It would make no difference if that embodiment resided in a box of rocks or 130 year old oak trees, but it's there and it's a real thing for Auburn fans. It just so happens that replacing oak trees is very expensive and people have decided to put their money toward the rehabilitation/replacement of those trees. It's their choice to do so, as it is yours to disagree.

Seriously man? That is what made so many memories for people. That is why the a-hole poisoned them. So we couldn't celebrate with that tradition anymore.

It is not because we named the trees and feel they are our pets. They are a part of the history of the school and the town, but the tradition of rolling toomers is the loss of tradition.

You really think its some hippy type of thing? I think its sick to poison anything out of spite like he did, but I also like oak furniture. It IS the tradtion that is the true loss.

You didn't have to say it, I said it on the last page that we lose an UGA at least once a decade

fine, prayer vigil, rally, whatever you want to call it it was still the act of showing up for a memorial service

As for an online guestbook, it can be construed as the same except for having to make the effort to write (in some cases draw) a poem or note and physically walk or drive to a select location to tie or tape it to the memorial

Anyone that thinks this will only cost $2500 when it is all said and done is crazy. The are digging trenches to put liquid charcoal in the ground to try and soak up the poison. Once the trees die, all the soil will have to be removed along with the trees and the entire area will have to be remediated. The will include removing the brick walls in that area, the curb, the sidewalk, and possibly part of the street. An HDPE separation will have to be put down, then all of the soil replaced. Full size oaks will probably be put down and they are not cheap. Then all of the infrastructure will be put back. $2500??? No way.

ETA: I do not think Bama fans should pay for this. Harvey should. Thanks for the classy gesture and funds donated so far.
2500$ Is what Auburn estimated though. Sounds like they dont intend to dig up the soil, as spike 80df is not hazardous to human health. Some booster will probble donate some trees and get his name on a plaque

I believe the statute against Updyke stated $2500. Not the actual cost.

correct. Damages have to be $2500 or more to constitute the charges he was arrested for.

No, I get that they're symbolic (I think every campus has some sort of nostalgic object that fans rally around. UGA has the chapel bell, north campus, the arches, etc.) and that they carry a priceless amount of sentimental value for most folks. I get it, I'm not saying I don't sympathize wholeheartedly with the loss (temporary or not) of the two trees. But where I differ is in the lengths that some (on both the Auburn and Bama sides - but mostly with this particular Bama contingent) are taking to feel as outraged and upset over this as possible. I can certainly appreciate the Bama side wanting to show their respect and good will toward Auburn, and I can appreciate Auburn being pissed off and upset over what happened, but IMO things are being exaggerated a bit

to your comment on the 2500 and the rest of your statement except the last sentence. How about a nice glass of spike for yourself. Next time think before posting.
