I have been having heated debates with my Brother-in-Law about Tennessee as a program. He is a Michigan fan, he argued Tennessee was not a good program and we will never bounce back.

I know Tennessee is in a little rut right now, but I still think we are a Top-Tier S.E.C. program. The program has done a lot for this conference and was a big part of building it into what it has become today. With all the traditions, money, 100k stadium its only a matter of time before we bounce back.

Just wondering what you guys think.....Serious question.

I would argue that Tennessee is a second tier SEC program that's going through a down period right now.

Historically..yes. Im not so sure y'all should have fired Fulmer and you're paying the price. Kiffin and now Dooley. Dooley may turn out to be OK but i think he's way overrated.

But if you go by all-time and not just the past few years then yes...UT is a top tier SEC team.

Give Dooley time. He is the answer and y'all won't regret it.

Doesn't UT have some very wealthy alumni in the corporate world? Money really doesn't seem to be an issue in Knoxville, especially regarding athletics.

I'd say you'll be back soon.

I think that now that you guys no longer have Kiffin and all of the negatives that he represents, and have replaced him with at least an honorable man in Dooley, you have a good chance to recover and challenge for the SEC title within 5 years. However, you still have a lot of thugs on your team that need culling as seen in the latest bar fight episode.

Kiffin damaged your program and would have continued to do so had he stayed. He is now right where he belongs at USC and you guys are much better off for it.

JMHO.

I think you should tell him to worry about his own program ever getting off the matt. Ask him when's the next time he thinks they'll beat Ohio State.

i think he's suffering from Michiganitis or RichRodotis... something like that. he's a moron if he believes Tennessee won't be a SUPERIOR competitor again. it's all in the swings man. you're in a downswing.

i think there are WAY more valid arguments that Michigan won't rise again than there EVER could be for UT.

I say Tennessee is historically in the top tier of SEC programs, but they are going through a rough period at the moment.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

All they need is the right coach, some improved facilities, and a good recruiting pitch and they will be back to competing for it all every year.

Again, sounds familiar, doesn't it...?

Historically of course Tennessee is up there. I think taking every single thing into account, UT is a top 12 program of all time. But they are in a serious rut right now. Haven't made any national noise since 2001, haven't won an SEC title since 1998, and look to have a terrible season this year. They're down right now, but as is the nature with any of the SEC's big 6 programs, they'll bounce back in due time.

UTenn is a top SEC program and top 15 in the country, imo. The vols will be back but its going to take a lot of rebuilding. I would like to have seen them hire a more established coach.. Dooley is a big gamble but it could definitely pay off in the long term. Just need the alumni and administration to stick with him for at least 3 or 4 years. Unless a top 5 head coach becomes available and wants the UT job they need to stick with Dooley. UT doesn't need any more staff turnover any time soon.

I'd say we're a top tier team who sucks at the moment. No doubt UT will bounce back, but it's going to suck until we do.

First off, frick Tennessee. Secondly, yeah, you guys are a top tier SEC program going through an ultra shitty time. Just because you hit a rough patch doesn't make you any less valuable to the SEC as a whole. It's just that you aren't worth a damn right now. That all could change very easily and I think that is one of the things that separates the top tier teams from the lower tier teams-- the ability to bounce back after some rough times. Been there, done that. But, like I said in my opening statement, frick Tennessee.

What have you done for the SEC lately? The fact is at the present time there are two top-tier SEC teams, teams that are at a level clearly above the other ten. The rest of us—including my team and yours—are trying to climb back up there.

That's interesting out of a Michigan guy - first off UT is a historically significant program... if he doesn't think that he's just uninformed... while clearly not top five UT should be in anyone's top 10-15 programs of all time

Michigan has like one national championship in the last 30 years right? They have to recruit out of state and they compete against a rival (Ohio State not Florida, Georgia etc) from a more talent rich state

Today Michigan mostly = Tennessee... both will need excellent coaches to recruit and compete against programs with more in state advantages

Tennessee is second only to Bama in the SEC when it comes to history and tradition. They went out to the Rose Bowl much like Bama way back before southern football was respected nationally.

I am split on the future of Tennessee as a big boy. Part of me says that the money, facilities and crowd support will eventually lead them back to the top of the heap. However I am worried for several reasons. Tennessee always recruited out of state for a large portion of it's talent due to the lack of top talent in state. I believe there is only 1 or 2 four stars in Tennessee this year, per Rivals. Having a 100,000 seat stadium with top of the line facilities gave the Vols a leg up on competition. Now most of the big SEC schools have mammoth stadiums with even nicer facilities. Where will UT find the edge in recruiting now?
