State pride or school pride?

This is my first post here on the Rant, and I'll try to make it a decent one.
My question is, do you pull for your team out of pride for the state they represent, or for the school? And did you actually attend the school in question?
To answer my own question, it is most definitely state pride for me. I did attend Alabama, but my love for the football team was established well before that.

State Pride, because we all know that Mississippi State IS the STATE univeristy here in Mississippi.

Honestly, it's both.
I am very proud to be from Tennessee. I love my state.
But I'm also very proud of my school and proud that I have a degree from UT.

My father started taking me to Ole Miss games in the mid-60's when I was 8 years old and we had season tickets and went to almost every game when I was a kid.
At that time--the height of the Vaught era, just about everybody in Mississippi who was not an MSU alum (and even some who were) was an Ole Miss fan, just as everybody who lived in Alabama and was not an Auburn alum was a Bama fan.
When it came time to go to college, I got a scholarship offer from a prestigious private school in a big city in another part of the country, so I took it....and then went to grad school in the Ivy League, so I ended up never having attended Ole Miss, but have always been a fan, particularly since neither of the schools I actually attended competes in Division 1A.
I contemplated switching allegiance over the years, but my heart would not let me do what my head told me would be a good idea......so here I am, still

I grew up an Alabama fan. I went to college at UAB but have always been a BAMA fan.
I can remember Alabama football always being a huge part of our life even since I was a child. Saturday's during football season always revolved around Alabama and if they were on TV it was a big deal to get to watch the game.
We usually went to the games at legion field. I remember standing by the fence as a little boy and waiting for coach Bryant to come out of the tunnel. I thought he was some kind of god when I was a kid. He looked like a giant to me.
Those were some good times.

School pride.
I'm not from Kentucky. I'm from Virginia and want to live in New York in the near future, so state pride is not a factor at all.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

First Welcome My Brother!
Great first post.
I never went to UA but have a couple relatives that did. Just a long long time Bama Fan. Us against The Barn? Recruiting is the main reason. Whoever wins the Iron Bowl usually gets to "Cherry Pick" the available state recruits. The Hate is because of long time family allegance to either program.
Do you have 15 more Alabama friends who'd like to come on here? Our Sec brethren here are complaining we Bama Fans aren't really have enough posters here now (Cough Cough) so do invite more! RTR.

I pull for both of the Mississippi schools when they are not playing Alabama. I grew up an Ole Miss fan until I enrolled at UA. I am just as likely to pull for MSU as I am Ole Miss these days.

Both. I love our state, and Arkansas is the only major sporting school in the state.

And did you actually attend the school in question?
Currently attending.

two of my uncles went to LSU. I graduated from LSU. my first game in Tiger Stadium was as an 8th grader. so, I pull for my university.
oh, and:
= poser
UAB has a football team. you are obligated to pull for them. perhaps you and some La Tech alums should get together.

I was raised an Auburn man, went to school and graduated from Auburn so I have and always will pull for Auburn with all of my heart. Your question about "state pride" is irrelevant in states like Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, S. Carolina.....well, just about every SEC state other than Louisiana and Arkansas.

re: State pride or school pride?
I haven't read all the trash talking that I assume is going on, but if Ole Miss or USM are playing someone besides state, I am rooting for them. Growing up in MS and having moved back recently, I take the state pride route. Now if it's anyone else in the state, I turn the page in the newspaper, or the channel on the radio.
I just re read the first post. I pull for state because I grew up going to games there, and graduated from there in 06'

School Pride
I actually think it is weird for people to be super fans of schools if they have no family ties or didn't attend the university.

I think it is also weird to root for Bama and not Auburn also the other way around if it is for state pride. They are peer universities and both public schools.

Both. I love the state of Alabama almost as much as I love The University of Alabama.

Welcome. i am new as well. very fun board. i live in tejas and have for many years coming here like many alabamians to find work. i still have many family and friends in bama. no, barely got out of High Sckrool then the military got me. grew up like many in the early 60's and 70's having to livedown the national bias against us. alabama and bear bryant gave us all great pride whenever we beat the shite out of some yankee team. it gave the whole south pride. thats why bama is problably the greatest and has the largest fan base of any school in the south. many fans are jealous and think we're arrogant etc. they really like like us. state pride was important but southern pride was everything. roll tide!

Good question. I attend college next year, and chances are, it will be out of state. I'll cheer hard for both the Bucks and whatever school I go to, but if they happened to play eachother, I don't know who I'd go for.
So, both, I just don't know whether school or state pride is stronger.

Delta State Fighting Okras FTW!

I guess both. I'm from Baton Rouge and I went to LSU for 3 years. No team can affect my mood the way LSU does.
