Finebaum wrote a decent article worthy of discussion and that can definitely be debated.

LINK

Here are his comments on my favorite (biased obviously) who I think should be 1 spot higher without any doubt.

quote:

6. Pat Dye (Auburn): It is easy to overlook his accomplishments since he's been out of the game for 16 years. However, in 12 years at Auburn, he won four SEC titles, got robbed of a national title in 1983 and completely changed the direction of Auburn football by ending a nine-game losing streak to Alabama. He had a stretch of beating Alabama six of eight (and easily could have won eight straight). His influence remains strong today.

He points out two things that I have said over and over. 1. AU was robbed in 1983 in an absolute travesty - much worse than 2004. 2. AU was two fluke/miracle plays away from beating Bama 8 straight.

Based on the criteria he has listed, Meyer should be ahead of Saban. Of course, this is Finebaum, I'm surprised Meyer even made the list.

refresh our memory - couldn't several teams claim being robbed in 1983?

Is this the year SMU went undefeated, but not untied, and Penn State won the national championship with a single loss?

I cannot believe Finebaum is still trying to give Saban credit for LSU's record from '05-'07.

I guess its Saban's fault Bobby Williams was fired at Michigan State in 2002 with widespread drug allegations with some players as one reason for his dismissal in addition to poor coaching.

I wonder if he will drop Tuberville from the list when Chizik falls on his face. He did leave them in a pretty shitty condition.
IMO you can't blame Chizik for how bad that team looks right now.
It's not hard to see the correlation.

Speaking of ole Pat, did he ever explain how his pants with car keys ended up in the bottom of a lake - yet he doesn't remember losing them?

The amusing thing is that when Saban was at LSU, Finebaum considered him to be a mediocre coach. He probably would have been on the tail end of this list if at all.

Both Meyer and Dooley should be over Saban.

I think he was referring to the fact that Miami jumped Auburn in the polls to claim number 1 after their win over Nebraska. Auburn beat Michigan but stayed number 3. Both teams had 1 loss.

Saban over Meyer an epic fail? FAIL!

Meyer is a good one, but Saban has taken over teams and turned them around withing a year or two. What he did at LSU and Alabama is amazing in regards to the amount of time it took him to accomplish it. Meyer did a great job in Utah, but Florida already had a good thing going when he showed up there. You could put a Butch Davis down there and get the same results.

with Finebaum, Les Miles could win several more SEC titles and not be mentioned. since he gives all of Miles wins to Saban, Les has to start over from scratch. of course, last season's 12-0 run for Bama was mostly with Shula's players, and Meyers 1st NC was with Zook's players, but those don't count cause he says so.

My unbiased opinion:

1a. Stallings
1b. Saban
3. Francione
4. Curry
5. Perkins
6. Shula
7. Dubose
8. Price

All you other teams need to try to step it up with your next hire.

the cupboard was not bare at either LSU or UA when Saban arrived. Dinardo did an excellent job recruiting and Shula did well also. so, while he did return both programs to the winners circle, he did it quickly because both programs already had the talent when he arrived. no question Saban is a hell of a coach.
