They should end it. It does not benefit the teams in the current playoff format. But it generates too much money for them to scrap it.

The NFL integrates the AFC and NFC championship games into the playoffs. They don’t have separate conference championship games and then the playoffs.

Both Georgia and Alabama have suffered injuries in the SEC championship that may have cost them national championships in the playoffs.

it's time to end it
UGA lost their starting QB
it could potentially hurt your seeding and/or take you out of the playoffs with a potential loss
adding the 9th sec game also impacts it as teams will likely have more losses heading into that game

Adding the 9th game would help with the money loss, if they cancel it.

Most of the ADs, fans and players are saying the same thing.

It's the university presidents, Skankey, and Disney/ABC/ESPN that are not going to allow that to happen any time soon.

Losing it didn't hurt Alabama last year and winning it didn't really help Georgia.

There's no point to it anymore unfortunately.

It used to be one of the most important games of the year but quickly became irrelevant.

A victim of the mega playoff

It’s really Alabama and Georgia’s fault for the SECCG still being around all these years.

Every single time they play in the dome it’s peak cinema and the TV ratings show it. The only 2 that were pretty much duds were 2021 and 2025. And even then, 2021 wasn’t bad up until the 2nd half and the first meet up in Athens of 2025 was the BEST game of the year in college football.

It’s like how USC vs. Notre Dame was in the early 2000s. There’s a whole generation of kids that’s gonna grow up and all they’re gonna know is Alabama and Georgia aura.

Maybe replace the conference championship weekend of games with playoff play-in games? Maybe they have to wait until the playoff inevitably expands before they can do that

At least this way we do not have to worry about the teams at the top of the conference hurting their standing

So using this logic why even have conferences?

Nope, that's a winner take all mentality. Winning your particular conference is for the kids on that team two decades from now. It's bragging rights amongst extended family. And as back arse-ward smart as the NIL.

You can have a conference champion without a conference championship game

and to answer your question, $$$$, in particular TV revenue.

The championship games became a creation for modern TV revenue and exposure. The SEC has existed far longer without a conference championship game and If conferences can find a we to keep that revenue stream on that weekend without a championship game, they will

Agree..it only hurts the SEC now..but it makes a ton of money, so they will not cancel it.

Eh.

Without divisions you're going to end up in a scenario where multiple teams have a valid claim to playing in the championship game not able to get in.

Last year four teams finished 7-1 (Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Georgia, Alabama).
Texas A&M was left out despite not playing any of the other 3.
Ole Miss was left out despite only playing Georgia.

We should just go back to the era of co-champions, honestly, as the convoluted way of determining who gets to go to the title game is just wonky.
Texas A&M could easily have not played any of the above 3, but if their schedule had Vandy instead of Arkansas and Tennessee instead of Florida, they're likely in over Georgia.

Getting in because of a quirk of scheduling instead of beating everyone in your division already demeans the whole thing.
