SSX Tricky Ricky Barnes aka Regular Season Rick has one total win as an underseed in his entire NCAA tournament career which spans 1989 (Glen Rice) to now.
2002: #6 Texas over #3 Mississippi State
Every single other one of his tournament wins have been vs lower seeds
In 2026 @ Texas alone Sean Miller has produced two more such wins
2026: #11 Texas over #6 BYU
2026: #11 Texas over #3 Gonzaga

I mean, you’re right, but I am glad to have him. He has had more success than any other Tennessee basketball coach in my lifetime. Except for the Bruce Pearl years we have pretty much sucked my whole life. I remember Wade Houston, Kevin O’Neil, Jerry Green, Buzz Peterson, and Cuonzo Martin. When Jerry Green is the best success story that is not good.

I mean he is usually a top 5 seed. He loses plenty of head scratcher tournament games but yall haven't exactly been killing it since he left. We have beat yall the last 5 times we've played.

Rick Barnes was the first guy Mitch Barnhart wanted at Kentucky. But Barnes hung around with the idea that Kevin Durant would run it back at Texas.
So Kentucky ended up with Billy Clyde. And Mitch didn't get to hire another guy to go to church with.
I'm really, really tiring of Mitch Barnhart.

FWIW, one benefit (?) of joining the SEC is learning to spell Tennessee and Mississippi without using spell check. I guess Texans can say they have that going for them.

I don’t see the need to knock Rick Barnes, a guy who took us to our first Final 4 (in 2003) since the 1940’s. I always liked the guy, one of my all-time favorite coaches at Texas, along with Augie and Mack. I think he was getting a little stale at Texas, needed a fresh start, but I always root for him when he’s not playing us.

Barnes has now been to 4 consecutive Sweet 16’s now. When was last time Texas was in Sweet 16 prior this year?
