We’d have a solid case for being the class of the SEC in the 80s with our 4 SEC titles were it not for the fact it took us a couple of years to get rolling with Dye.

you can't be the class of any decade without having won a national title in it.

And that's not talking shite either, just seems like it'd kind of be a prerequisite.

We started the decade off 0-6 in the SEC in 1980 which hurt us as far as the entire decade. But from 83-89 we were the class of the league for sure. 4 titles in 7 seasons.

Not sure I'd agree with that. Back in those days, winning a championship was more arbitrary. A weak schedule was helpful and bowl tie-ins/selections had a big influence on the voting outcome. Passing the eye test was important, because in the end it was a beauty contest. Votes still matter, but not nearly as much.
