The statement took me aback when he said it until he laid out his evidence

He said the OL and DL that Nick Saban inherited better trench players from Shula than Kalen DeBoer did from Nick Saban. His evidence was

OL Andre Smith, William Vlachos and Mike Johnson

DT Lorenzo Washington and Wallace Gillberry

KD
OL Kayden Proctor, Jaeden Roberts, no Center, Wilkin Formby

DT Tim Keenan, LT Overton,

At first I thought it was a crazy statement until he listed players. That one was pretty astounding. I suppose in our minds we romanticize the past and create a reality based in perception. I still don’t know if Kalen DeBoer is the right guy, I suppose I’m still in wait and see mode. I think he is a good coach but I guess I’m more or less unsure of his brand of football will work in the SEC and when Alabama gets into the playoffs.

We gotten worse every year since 2020. Basically since Cochran left we’ve gotten worse on the LOS every year and overall softer as a team every year

This is more a David Ballou problem than a Kalen DeBoer problem IMO

People think our cupboard was stocked. It wasn’t. We had no QB. We had no RBs. All of his WRs have portables out, because they were replaced by freshmen and sophomores. OL signees would routinely transfer out and couldn’t play at their new schools. Linebackers and d linemen just didn’t play great.

Early on, Saban stockpiled studs. Later on, he stockpiled mostly duds. I don’t know why.

I will add that coaches simply can’t coach players anymore. They cry and transfer. It can be hard to get a lot out of guys under such circumstances.

The 2026 season will tell the tale on Kalen. Problem is we have to wait 9 months to learn the deal.

This is what I believe as well.

For me the S&C and ST should have been the first told to look for other jobs

Development and scheme are part of the deal. Proctor and Roberts excel in schemes that work for them.

You can’t just lean completely into your system if you don’t have the personnel for it. You have to be adaptable.

Next year there will be no excuse. And this year there really isn’t an excuse for getting embarrassed by 35 points.

This year's complete inability to run the ball is just the nadir of a trend that started when Young was still the QB. The last couple of years we've had Milroe to manufacture rushing yards when the RBs couldn't. This year we didn't.

Are we sure these guys wouldn’t have been similar players to the Shula guys if they had been developed better?

DeBoer’s rosters have been first and second in 247 team talent in his two seasons. Maybe the lack of development of those guys started in the late Saban era, but let’s not pretend the cupboard was bare.

Kayden Proctor and Jaeden Roberts will never be Andre Smith and Mike Johnson. Those two dudes were monsters and had long successful NFL careers. It’s not a physical make up problem it’s more f an attitude and meanness issue to me. The biggest impact Landon Dickerson had n our OL is he absolutely changed the culture of that OL. He was just that guy. We don’t ah e anyone who can push these players from a peer standpoint.

There's a fine line between HS recruiting and portaling when it comes to building a roster now, but that's what Courtney Morgan gets paid to do.

If a guy is going into his Junior year and he's not a full time starter, you can guess with about an 80% certainty that he's going to transfer.

Lottie Brooks, Ryan Williams, Dijon Lee...guys like that aren't a flight risk. I think it's as important as ever now to make sure your best players are playing, regardless of age. That's going to make "dynasties" impossible. I think pretty much from here going forward until things change, everything is going to have to come together perfectly for a team to win it, and then you'll see them take a dip the next season.

It sucks, because a kid like Keeley who is finally learning to play football is going to be a great player for someone- after Bama spent 3 years getting his body right and teaching him technique.

When those guys leave..that you haven't relied on heavily yet but you are counting on relying heavily on going forward, it's imperative they're replaced with equal or better talent- and it has to be a turn key operation. Losing Keeley means we need to sign the kid from USC. We don't have a ready made replacement for Overton.

When you look at a HS recruiting class now, you can pretty much bank on 1 kid from each position finishing his career at Bama.

I could take our incoming class right now and predict 15 transfers and would bet good money i'd get 7 or 8 of them right. That's the sport now

Cignetti isn't buying you can't coach players anymore. His roster is revealing. Have to be careful.

Saban had 1st Rd OL but a lot of them overachieved in college and flopped in the NFL.

Andre Smith, James Carpenter, Chance Wommack, DJ Fluker, Jonah Williams, Jedrick Wills Jr, Alex Leatherwood, Evan Neal, JC Latham were all serviceable to busts.

NONE made the Pro Bowl or All Pro

The Cochran glaze is insane. When we had Scott Cochran we got our arses whipped by hurry up offenses

Also, this level of thought discredits Saban ability to coach/scheme and develop these players.

We know Andre Smith was irresponsible due to being suspended for the Utah Sugar Bowl where we got stomped. Smith was over weight at his Pro Day, etc.

Saban and staff schemed these players to be in position to be drafted. They excelled at Alabama but let’s not pretend that Mike Johnson and Andre were world beaters.

Like always….its about maximizing your players abilities. That’s what makes a GOAT coach.

Jason Kelce at Cincy wasn’t crazy good and then he had multiple All Pros under Stoutland in Philly.

There is a ton to look at when you are talking player evaluations and success.

Where did he glaze? He made a correct observation. It isn't like he is begging for Cochran like these guys begging for Cignetti as if he is better than Saban.

We don't need Cochran we need a better S&C program and that isn't what we have gotten from Ballou

That 2008 offensive line that was so dominant on the line of scrimmage featured Antoine Caldwell, Andre Smith, and Mike Johnson. We also had two very talented backs in Glen Coffee and Mark Ingram II running behind them. While we don't go undefeated in the regular season in 2008 or win the national title in 2009 without the players Saban recruited, there was a solid core of players left behind that Shula recruited to the Capstone. They just needed discipline and coaching.

Not when Milroe is the one chosen to play.
