As of early January 2026, over 4,500 Division I college football players entered the transfer portal on the first day it opened (January 2nd), with numbers climbing rapidly, showcasing a massive wave of movement in the sport, with some sources indicating the figure is already over a third of all FBS players. This massive influx means thousands of players are seeking new schools, though not all will find a landing spot by the January 16 deadline.

Well, it's like your everyday job. You're more likely to get a larger raise going elsewhere compared to staying where you are.

If you enter the portal you shouldn't be allowed to use the school youre currently at as a safety net to fall back on.

Its gonna be the deep pockets that start winning titles in this system....its why Notre Dame is starting to get top 3 recruiting classes even though we havent won a title since 1988. Recruits are going where they can get paid. ND has a billion dollar contract from NBC alone. Texas will be right there.... as will Michigan. Georgia and Alabama are toast....they have nowhere near the money to compete with that. Its why they are struggling for the last 3 years. ND was in the Natty last year and went through Indiana, Georgia and Penn State and played Ohio State for the Title. Texas was in the Final 4 last year....Michigan won the title the year before. Big money programs ar gonna take this NIL over.

The 16th is just the deadline to enter. As long as they are at another school in time to enroll they are good.

I’d love to see some analysis done on how many of these kids who actually transfer actually contribute meaningfully to their next team.

Its not gonna last like this. We are seeing the extremes of this. Once enough teams drop millions on their rosters and still miss the playoffs, people will stop writing the big checks and there wont be a bag to chase for the vast majority of players.

I also think there are three types of players in the portal. Those who are chasing money, those who are chasing dreams, and those taking the easy way out to get playing time.

Eventually coaches are gonna realize that only the second category of players are worth getting

Well if college football is like your everyday job no actual college football fans want to watch anymore. You have destroyed 100+ years of tradition in 5 years.

Many of these kids get terrible advice or possess an inflated sense of their worth. The worst is seeing kids that don’t have any game film hit the portal as they tend to fall into a lower division or simply don’t find a landing spot.

And it all started with Gus Malzahn. How about that?

Don't worry though, Alabama is getting ready to join you guys.

This is what everyone wanted in the 2010's whether they want to admit or not. You always get what you ask for and then reap what you sow.

The fans destroyed it by their win-at-all-costs attitude and extremely high expectations for players.

You want players that have NFL ability, are legitimate college students who value education, are content with a scholarship while everyone around them gets rich and entertained off their efforts, and are fiercely loyal to a school (ahead of their own self interests) that might be three time zones away from where they were born and raised.

This shite was never going to work indefinitely.
