I think the take isn't so much "it's immoral to fire a high-profile employee without having an HR representative in the room" as it is "it's stupid to fire a high-profile employee without having an HR representative in the room."

If you as a company or organization are about to make a decision with millions of dollars at stake and are going to enact a provision in a contract that could lead to litigation, you want to do everything by the book, which in this case is having multiple people, including HR, in the room.

Were many of them multi-million dollar hires, whose performance could lead to millions more, and were any of them in some way perhaps the face of the company?
