The official official news of the Curtis flip has me thinking. A few years ago, we went all in on Arch when it was readily apparent that Julian Sayin wanted to commit to us but we chose to deny him and solely pursue Arch. Thankfully it didn’t happen at the last minute but we didn’t get him and so I don’t think we signed a QB that class.

Last year, Raiola dips at the last second and we keep Puglisi.

Now Curtis jades us at the 11th hour. We were essentially a lock for Bowe Bentley (think Gunner 2.0) but got Curtis’s commitment and gambled on that. It bit us.

Now the transfer portal immediately lessens any recruiting blow because we can always grab at least a decent lower level starter to bridge the gaps, but I don’t think it’s something to solely rely on. I’m to the point that I think we need to do one of 2 things. Either say (for example) “Yea Arch we really want you but we’re taking Sayin too so do with that what you will”. Or we should pursue the high 4 star, less likely to decommit guy from the start. Avoid the high profile extra expensive drama. These guys are gonna cost a lot period, so deal with the ones who seem to be uninterested in the wooing process.

Thoughts?

Bowe Bentley will be a superstar I think. If we can get him he looked awesome from the tape I saw.

That's all solid stuff, but I think that Curtis was a perfect storm. Rusty pointed out how first we beat out Ohio State for Curtis' committment and then we beat out Oregon when he re-committed.

Hometown kid. Wants to start as a freshman. He just witnessed the Vandy offensive coaching staff turn a rudy into a Heisman finalist.

Does seem like we get caught with our pants down a lot with high profile skill players lately. Might be time to start focusing on Georgia based kids more and less on the national top 10.

I think that, as a legendary recruiter, head coach, & basically the CEO of a 9-10 figure sporting brand, Kirby is much, MUCH better than you & I when it comes to reading & interacting with people. That means picking out who's 100% ready for the Dawg way & who is maybe looking for a different path.

I think that with Curtis & Raiola, he was aware of the risk & decided that it was worth it anyways. Yeah it's been stinky, but we've had very solid plan Bs ready to go in the form of 4 years in the program guys like Gunner & Beck. And even after the Justin Fields situation, Kirby found Stetson & 5 star JT Daniels in a heartbeat.

Maybe this is the Homer in me, but I feel like any year the UGA QB position has been open, the very best guys in the country have raced to sign up & play for us. Imo, other than Jamie Newman (wonder what that year would've looked like) our QB position has already been well established for years going into the offseason

Please don’t bring up JT Daniel’s. What a flop!

Not worried. We could always go portal. Like others said, focus on the region players and get the highest ranked players you can get. Retain the talent with paying. Then spend to fill in the void and crucial needs. These type of things are to be expected now and lessens the blow.

I agree. I want lunch pale prospects like Gunner who want to be here.
And the truth is the supporting OL and skill players are what make an offense click as long as QB is competent.

Dumbasses think they can play right away, that doesn't mix with teams who compete for NCs every single year and can't risk losing games so these pimps can grow up fast instead of learning for a season behind a player who has been in the system.

Kid has now trolled himself, Vandy lost to every decent team they played...... It was the schedule, same for Ole Miss..

There’s really no incentive for these kids to wait. You can go and get immediate playing time and then transfer to another program any time.

I sure as hell wouldn’t have gone to Vandy though with their whole team basically turning over. All he’s going to learn is how to run for his life.

We gotta do something different. Getting punked by Clark Lea, Matt Ruhle, and Deion Sanders for top recruits is stupid.

Deion doesn’t go in that list. We backed off Julian Lewis because his family (dad) made it clear they were looking for certain demands that we weren’t giving and decided to steer clear that dramatic camp.

I’d rather have the Stets and Gunners than the latest media darling.

Why? Take a look at recent history and tell me what we should have done differently....

Beck - Was a high 4 star recruit. He led us to a SECC and who knows what he could have done had he stayed put this year. But even at Miami he's thrown for 3000+ yds, 25 TDs and perhaps about to get them to the playoffs. He hasn't done bad.

Stockton - For some reason is never included in talk about high profile recruits, but he broke every Ga HS record that Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson set. This kid was NO slouch recruit. And all he's done this year as a starter is lead us to an 11-1 record and the playoffs with a possible natty still within reach. Who would you trade him for this season?

Ryan Montgomery - Had phenom junior year numbers and probably would have been a 5 star top 3 or 4 QB recruit in the country his senior year if he had not got hurt. And uh, he still has a chance to be a UGA star.

Puglisi - We haven't saw too much of him, but he's got a cannon and enough talent that Saban and Kirby both offered him a scholly on the spot the first time they saw him perform in person. So, that's saying something.

Dylan Raiola - He got away from us, but this season at Nebraska, he's thrown for 2000 yds, 18 TDs and 6 ints. That's very mediocre numbers for a former 5 star recruit. We didn't lose much with him IMO.

Julian Sayin - Another one that got away, and he's doing well at Ohio St but he's played against a cream puff schedule and is surrounded by a very talented team. I venture to say there's a dozen or more QBs, including Stockton, that would have equal or greater numbers if they were in his shoes this season.

All that being said, what's been so bad that we need to change about our current QB recruiting/development/success?

Good post. As long as you're not one of the fellas who quits in the game threads. You are receiving the prestigious "Must read his/her posts award."

The great Finely has held the prestigious award for more weeks in a row than any other poster. Perhaps you can unseat her.

That's not what is happening

Those are solid numbers for only 9 games. Let’s not act like he wouldn’t have better stats with way better talent around him.

Just my opinion, but in college it's not as important to have a top ranked qb as people think. I'm perfectly happy with a guy who can think better than he can throw a football and who is willing to spend two or even three years learning the system before he becomes a starter. Give Bobo or any good coach/coordinator a steady stream of those guys and you can win championships. We may have a walk-on on campus right now who'll be ready to start and do a good job in 2027.

I'm not gonna sweat the loss of divas who think they're worth millions a year straight out of HS, think they can immediately play championship level football because of arm talent, and expect to be drafted #1 at the age of 20. 99% of those guys are not Matt Stafford, and even if they are it doesn't guarantee team success while they're learning on the job in college.
