Why not hire a good coordinator?

What does Kirby, Ryan Day, Marcus Freeman and Dan Lanning all have in common? They were all just coordinators that went straight to a head coaching jobs at big-name schools and all of them were home-run hires. There's lots of great coordinators out there. Why aren't they being looked at more instead of just getting mediocre head coaches that never really accomplished anything?

Because LSU likes to set money they don’t have on fire.

What’s not to get? Kiffin has shown he can manage a team in the portal/NIL era and get them to the playoffs.

Kiffin is just an improved version of Sark. Neither have won a thing and neither ever will. Lane is a lot better at offense, however.

Carter has been excellent hiring for Ole Miss.
I'm curious to see where he turns.
Could be a coordinator but he seems to prefer coaches with baggage.
Im confident he will make a quality hire.

Why.... because LSU would hire someone like Joe Sloan or Cam Cameron or Matt "Air" Canada.

Having not learned anything from the Kelly debacle, they just repeated it again. Lane is a heck of a coach but he is prone to helmet fires, that inexplicably lose them games.

Good coordinator? Lake Kiffin was a great coordinator. And LSU is hiring him.

…and then torpedoing the whole effort by leaving and threatening to take staff on the eve of their CFP voyage.

You know who else was a great coordinator for Saban?
Be careful what you wish for

How is Aranda doing at Baylor? Do we need to discuss all the good coordinators that have failed as HC’s?

That's true, and some coordinators are busts (ie; Sark). But my point was, with UGA, Ohio St, Notre Dame and Oregon you are arguably looking at the top of the college football food chain. So, hiring straight from the coordinator pool isn't mathematically such a bad idea, evidently. And there are some fantastic coordinators out there. Lane was a good coordinator but hasn't proved too much as a HC.

Damn you for making me defend Sark. Obviously I want him gone and think he's overrated, but I wouldn't call him a bust. He wins a lot of games and definitely has us ready in rivalry games.
but he's not a guy who's ever going to win a title....but are we going to call every coach who doesn't a "bust"?

Eh, maybe bust was a strong word.

Eh, maybe bust was a strong word. My whole point being that these schools are tripping all over themselves to get also-ran HCs when there are great coordinators all over the place. And history has proved that is NOT a bad strategy.
oh yeah I'm with you there. In fact, I'd much rather roll the dice on a hungry coordinator than an also-ran HC simply because he won in the past. No argument.
