Why would they ever join a conference? lose a few games a year, schedule cupcakes to get the back to the top 10 , no conference championship to deal with and punch your ticket to the playoffs every year.

Based on thread title, I came here to argue…
But you are an observant Observer with valid points!
How many brands in the SEC are big enough to leverage this formula?

Texas has threatened this for years.

Honestly. If they weren’t obsessed about A&M they would have done it and not come to the SEC.
Frankly, I think they made the wrong choice. They absolutely could be ND. And should have gone that route.
But A&M’s 2020 season scared the crap out of them. They are here because we are.
Full stop.

Texas, Bama, and UGA probably.
Hell, Texas was returning 9 starters on their entire team and the media ranked them #1 preseason.
They’ve won one more National Championship than me in the last 50 years, much like Notre Dame.

They had it in the Big 12 but failed. You have to understand with the horns money is more important than W/L. They can take a poor record. What they can’t accept is not being the top money school. That’s why they are in the SEC

The formula works for them except for one part: they don't win titles anymore.
Playing cupcake schedules means you get your arse kicked in the playoffs

Yeah…Sankey screwed the SEC with the 9 game SEC schedule. The chances of making it through that without a loss is slim, no matter who you are as this year proved.

You are talking about Texas in a thread about Notre Dame. Maybe you need to reevaluate who you think is obsessed.

Right now, they’d be better off being a full member of the ACC so they could get an automatic berth. There could be a whole bunch of 10-2 teams at the end of the regular season, and it’s not guaranteed that ND will get in. If BYU wins out and beats Tech in the Big XII title game, there goes a spot. It’s going to be an uncomfortable wait for the Irish on selection day.

ND whipped the SEC champion in the playoff.

But what terrible games for their fans

At the end of the day, unless it’s a situation like Bama last year where it was just impossible to rig the playoff in Bama’s favor, teams like Bama, ND, OSU, Texas, Michigan, USC will back door the playoff because of ESPN wanting ratings.
Wonder what the Boise State, SMU ratings were last year.

They beat Indiana, Georgia, and Penn State last year and played Ohio State closer than Texas did in the NC game. They did just fine in the playoffs.
They also have a very good team this year. It took a miracle for us to beat them and we got very lucky on that 4th down catch to win it. They are as good as the SEC teams vying for the playoffs.

You are not paying attention. ND gets in over anyone in the SEC with the same w/l record. Always have. When it was a 4 team playoff ND screwed A&M out of a playoff spot. Right now, Alabama and Vanderbilt are getting screwed by ND and the media. If OU has a tough game against #22 Mizzou, even with a win. ND plays a 3-7 Syracuse on NBC, and will run up the score. I would bet ND jumps ahead of OU in the CFP rankings. Four SEC teams with identical records, but vastly tougher competition could be ranked behind ND. With someone left out. BYU has one loss, vs a two loss ND and is ranked behind ND, even with the ridiculously easy ND schedule. You really think the money guys, the Yankee sports media would pick a cultish BYU over ND, the Gipper, four horsemen, touchdown Jesus for a playoff spot? In the event of a tie w/l record, ND gets the pick.
