Not a doctor, but lateral just means the outside part of the ankle and foot is what has been sprained. Doesn't really tell you anything about severity.

Web MD says 3-12 weeks recovery

Keyshawn Hall suffered a "lateral ankle and foot sprain" in the team's 73-72 loss to Houston on Sunday in Birmingham, Steven Pearl told reporters Tuesday afternoon. Pearl said the full extent of the injury is still being evaluated, but the expectation is that he will not miss extended time.
X-rays came back negative on both Hall's ankle and foot, Pearl said. There is no concrete timetable for his return.
"He's good," Pearl said. "... He's been in here every day trying to get treatment, and trying to get back as quickly as possible."
Hall is obviously not expected to practice this week while he receives treatment and rehabs with Auburn's medical team.
"I don't want him to play tomorrow," Pearl said. "I want him to get back to 100 percent because it's a long season."

Well that’s quite a range. So he’s out until we play Purdue or maybe all the way out until we plays Miss State… our 13th SEC game of the season. Let’s hope it’s sooner.

It sounds like he’s out for Jackson St.
He may miss a few more games.
They will evaluate day by day.
Ligaments can take time to heal up.
At least there was not a fracture.
I’m just guessing, but 2-4 weeks for this would not be unusual.

So we know the extent of ligament damage was relatively minor?

We obviously never want our star player to get hurt but there is always a silver lining to most things. Our team is going to have to grow up fast and play meaningful roles. Should benefit us when Hall comes back, when it matters most

Web MD estimates are for the average fat arse American whose idea of exercise is going from the couch to the pantry to fetch Doritos. If an in shape, healthy eating college basketball player can’t get healthy in the lower range of that estimate something is wrong with our training staff.

I’m making assumptions, IF they did an MRI, they can see everything.
Plain film X-ray will just rule out fracture of a bone.
From what the coach said, no fracture.
I don’t think they said, “torn ligament,” or anything like that.
Still ankles can take time to heal.
I’m not an orthopedic surgeon, but I’m guessing we might get to see him against Purdue.

Chatgpt says Grade 1 is 1-2 weeks. Grade 2 3-6 weeks and grade 3 is 8-12+ weeks.

He got X-rays and MRI. He’s going to be fine. No fracture or complete tears. Probably out for 1-2 weeks. They’ll be more conservative and not rush back since we’re only 4 games in to a 30+ game season.

Nah Grade 3 is about 4wks for someone in his shape. Also depends which tendon. Plus I doubt it was grade3 as that is a complete tear and sometimes requires surgery. He’s likely grade 2 max.
