I don’t get these schools.

Elko signed a 6 year deal in late 2023.

Yes, he is having a great year.

But why re-up another 6 year deal right now?

They don’t know if this a one off season with him.

It doesn’t seem necessary at all.

Let the contract play out- maybe add a year to the current deal.

But there is no reason for a new 6 year deal at this point.

I don’t get it

Someone explain?

Are they really worried that another school is going to poach him?

Sure.

It’s Texas A&M. It’s tradition.

I mean, I wouldn’t read to much into this. A new 6 year deal isn’t adding 6 more years to the current deal. It’s giving him a pay raise and adding 2 more years to his current deal. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. His performance gives him 2 extra seasons of stability and a pay bump.

Elko doesn't seem like the type of guy who gets fat and lazy after signing a deal for guaranteed generational wealth.

Elko seems 100% legit.

This one is probably deserved.

He’s the real deal.

If you have a coach that goes 8-5 in year 1 and follows it up in year 2 by beating 4 teams with fired coaches you just gotta extend him

It’s not a shot at TAM. I just don’t get why these schools feel the need to bump a guy and add more years (unless his left contractual years is less than 4 for recruiting purposes) that has not won anything to this point.

Why not just let the season play out and actually see if any hardware is raised?

These schools do it to themselves.

It is what we do.

A few things to consider:
1. This isn't a gamble. Elko has a tack record
2. Facilities and NIL in place
3. Recruiting in place
4. The contract will have incentives baked in

And 6 years is not a lot of time should something go wrong in 2-3 years.

So I'm fine with it.

Disagree. This is a good investment on their part. Lock him down.

Exactly

His contract guarantees him a 1 year extension for making the playoffs

So we’re really only giving him 1 more additional year

A dozen teams with deep pockets and open checkbooks, roaming the veldt of the CFB landscape and looking to poach a coach.

In all seriousness, he was a bargain rack hire, and I suspect that he was promised that he would get a new contract with tangible success. It is just a 2-year extension and a performance-based raise. Just A&M keeping its word.

He was only being paid $7M a year. There were 31 coaches paid more. The top coaches are probably getting $15M contracts.

He was way underpaid for the results he achieved this year and several schools were coming after him offering to probably double his pay.

Silly raises and extensions at the whisper of our coach being named to open coaching positions is an Aggie tradition

He's a hot commodity right now, with several prominent schools looking for a coach, it's either pay him, or watch him leave.

They are worried about other schools stealing him. Yes, the schools do to themselves.

Beware the one year wonder coach come contract time.

Schools never learn. So many coaches ride a dynamic QB they lucked up with to millions of dollars in knee jerk reactions. Not talking about the Aggies...just in general.
