This man’s life and knowledge should be studied exhaustively. This world could seriously benefit from it.

Attack the open space. That's how he was able to beat better talent.

That last year at State, when he won 9 games before he died, it was starting to click.

Get the audio book "The perfect pass", its about the creation of the AR with Leach and Mumme.

Its a great listen / read.

defenses do a decent job stretching horizontally or vertically. Leach and the Air Raid stretch both at the same time and almost every play there will be a defensive lapse

If you have a QB that can see it happening real time and able to deliver an accurate on time ball, it is deadly.

That takes a special kind of QB that can react quickly without having to think on the run.

Go to youtube and search AR QB drills

Its very cool how they align / rotate all their QBs simultaneously on each play to get reps throwing to each WR so no rep is wasted.

it really is. Leach was a master at finding the QBs that could do it. Everywhere he went, he found the players. Lots of coaches can think up brilliant schemes.

Leach did that but found the right players.

I remember Texas Tech playing Ole Miss in 2003 with Eli at QB and Tech had some random QB who out passed Eli that day and beat Ole Miss. They killed us on shovel passes and dump passes to their running back. Had never seen anything like it before.

The story about him calling Gardner Minschew is a great example of him getting his players.

and Tony Franklin took all that and turned it into a money making scheme.

Changed the names into series and put it all into a nice little patented package and charged out the rear end...
then threatened folks legally if they talked about the "system" outside of the "system"
even though thats exactly how he created it.

Leach was just a very interesting person as well as a coach. On the old Texas forum about 15 years ago someone posted about running into Leach at Pearl Harbor on the sub there. He was trying to get his kids hat back out of the ocean after it flew off. Just walked out on the sub with a pole net and snagged it. I still have the picture of him holding the net on the sub. Leach was a coach you would love to go on a weekend camping trip with.

I always thought that if he had a truly mobile QB that could run his system where he could dial up 3-5 designed QB runs (and also just to evade the pressure), his system could be absolutely lethal. The biggest weakness... at least on his latter teams... seemed to be that his QBs were absolute statues back there.

He sure was. The only thing I didnt get was how we could field great offences yearly but turn around and have some of the worst defenses in the conference year after year. That 2008 team had an average D and went 11-2. Lots of 9 win years even with the sucky defenses. Still wouldn't trade those years as a fan.
