If Kiffin stays in Oxford, it is a very telling statement on the current state of CFB.

At this point, I would think all the major programs and much of the national media are quietly pulling for Lane Kiffin to leave Ole Miss. Not because it’s the logical next step for him, but because of what it would mean if he doesn’t.

If Lane Kiffin is still coaching in Oxford in 2026, it becomes a powerful statement about how much college football has changed. It’s not just a coaching decision anymore—it’s a cultural shift. For decades, the sport was built around hierarchy and prestige. There were the blue-blood programs—Alabama, LSU, Florida, Ohio State, Texas—where success was assumed, and then there were everyone else’s programs, where winning big meant your coach would eventually be poached. Staying “small” was unthinkable.

But if Kiffin continues to win at Ole Miss and chooses to stay, it symbolizes that those old dynamics are fading fast. The transfer portal and NIL have flattened the landscape. The name on the front of the jersey doesn’t carry the same gravitational pull it once did. What matters now is who can manage rosters, build culture, and embrace the new realities of player movement and brand leverage.

In that world, a coach doesn’t have to chase legacy schools to build a legacy. Kiffin can recruit, compete, and win in Oxford just as effectively as he could in Gainesville or Baton Rouge—maybe more so, because he’s built it on his own terms.

That’s why the “system” would rather see him go. If Lane Kiffin can turn Ole Miss into a consistent national contender and stay there, it upends decades of assumptions about power, tradition, and what success is supposed to look like in college football. It means the era of the automatic “stepping-stone job” might finally be over.

Portal and NIL have changed everything. Loyalty now flows not to the logo, but to the leader—and that might be the scariest thing of all for the old guard.

I think it is totally different now. Coaches can win anywhere with the right commitment from boosters and rev share. Gone are the days where you better have a top 5 or so high school recruiting class each year. A coach can now go in and basically pick up free agents to build depth, to get quality starters, etc.

As long as the program has decent facilities and a willingness to win, all bets are off.

When Kiffin stays, it will be a huge boon for Ole Miss transfer portal & recruiting.

Guys making their decision on where to play ball will have just seen UF/LSU go all out after coach LK & fail to get him. Guys will logically think, if those schools wanted LK so bad, maybe I'd rather play for him too.

The fact Lane’s built a 10+ win machine hiring Kirkland brand portal dudes while plenty of bigger brands flounder using the old model already tells me the sport’s fundamentally changed. The only exception seems to be Bama.

I'm going to take off my shite -covered purple and gold glasses and respond, Darth.

That's an optimistic outlook. It could also be that he knows that the ceiling in Oxford is low when compared to the historic blue blood programs and he has a pretty plum job now where he can win 9-10 and be the conquering hero. I say that as a fan of the man who has said here and everywhere that Ole Miss has been THE most watchable SEC team since he got there. He's BEAUTIFUL troll-the best there is-and I say that admiringly and laughing when he zings my Tigers. But if he truly aspires to championship greatness, he needs to do it somewhere where such things are frequently done. FTR, if he stays in Oxford-I think it would be a healthy development in an insane college football landscape. It's a quality marriage. It would be nice if coaches stayed where they were well treated and appreciated. But if the goal is hardware, it ain't happening consistently in Oxford like it is Tuscaloosa or Gainesville or Columbus.

Question is: how long is LSU & UF willing to wait? If Ole Miss wins a first round game, both schools would have to wait till next year. Even if both schools are all-in on Kiffin, that means they have to sit on their arse for weeks after the season while every other school in the country is making backroom deals with their players & recruits with nobody to present a counteroffer.

Personally, I don't think either school is willing to play that waiting game. Hell, what if Ole Miss makes it all the way to the NC game? Is he really going to bolt immediately afterward?

I don't think Kiffin is going anywhere for those reasons.

Personally I think Kiffin needs to stay in Ole Miss. Not because Ole Miss is the best program, but because Ole Miss is the only team desperate enough to keep Kiffin happy. Let's just face it: Kiffin is to Ole Miss what Pearl was to Auburn. So programs like that need to accomodate and be understanding of the quirks because there is no other alternative.

Ole Miss lets Kiffin act like an immature coach at times and lets Kiffin half arse his coaching responsibiliies in the summer while Kiffin is living in another state. Ole Miss allows 9 and 10 win seasons. LSU just fired that. Florida is not going to be happy with that. Florida fans were grouchy to Spurrier when he did not win championships every year. Kiffin has a good thing going on in Ole Miss. He needs to stay there and eventually get a statue there.

You’re not fooling anyone; you were crying as you replied to this post. Florida, more than any other program, wants OP to be wrong, as the only thing you’ve been holding on to for the past two decades is the hope that traditional powerhouses still have an edge that no longer exists. You can’t make jokes about the MS schools moving to the Sunbelt so they can be more competitive because deep down you know you’re firmly in that same situation. It’s sad it’s taken you this long, we all knew it when you had no choice but to hire Billy Napier. Your program is the definition of a has been and will never recover to your former glory.

Is Kirby’s team resilient? Yes. Does it play at the same elite level? No.

How desperate is Aubbie right now? You were desperate enough to try & pry him 1 year ago & you've done nothing but lose since then.

I don’t really wanna argue with an idiot, but here I am. Your point was about the old model versus the new model and Bama being the only one to have figured it out. We’ve had the same success if not a little more Bama in the NIL area.

Maybe, but Kiffin is a unique guy with a unique track record and perspective. If he stays in Oxford its because he likes his life at Ole Miss.

I read that supposedly Sark wants out of Texas and go to the NFL, because of NIL is frustrating for him, supposedly he is being pressured to play Manning due to all the financial investments made, I don't understand why he doesn't change the offense to fit Mannings strengths like more read option but then again I also heard / believe Texas does not have elite units on offense; the o line is average at best, no great running back no great wide receiver don't understand if they are just recruiting based on stars vs real evaluations, Texas A&M seems to have done a much better job obviously, So maybe with all the unrealistic expectations and 3 year window to win at a high level or be fired..maybe he does stay..
